Has the EU Tide Turned?

Norris McWhirter senses that people are
finally waking up to the EU threat to Britain.

The first week of May 2003 may well go down in this country's history as the time that it really began to dawn on the British people that the European Union was planning within months to terminate the country's nine centuries of self-governance. Never before has the existence of Britain as an independent nation been depicted as being in such stark danger.

Two mighty tabloid newspapers bestirred themselves in the cause of democratic freedom and against our being ruled by unelected and undismissable overseas politicians.

The Daily Mail and The Sun are the two most read daily newspapers in the country with circulation figures of 2,400,000 and 3,460,000 copies respectively. They have now moved from being hostile to Brussels to becoming outright advocates of defeating the devious devices and ruthless intentions of the continental clique which is so determined to end our very being.

On 18 May, the newspaper with the highest circulation in Britain - News of the World (3,865,000 copies) - also published a stinging attack on Brussels' politicians. Add to this powerful stance that of the two largest trade unions - Unison (with 1.3 million members) and the Transport and General Workers Union (with 850,000 members).

Stung by this sudden swing against their secretive, sly, 'ever closer union' policy, the Government has resorted to blurting out uncoordinated retorts. Erstwhile Minister for Europe, Peter Hain, of Twickenham memory, said that the charges by the fast growing anti EU lobby were "baloney". The term, more usually spelt boloney, is of uncertain origin, but may be associated with sausages from Bologna in Italy.

On the 19th May the Prime Minister was in a huddle with the former French President, Valerie Giscard d'Estaing, who collects £176,400 salary as is the EU custom, tax free, for chairing the 105 strong Brussels committee which on June 20, will present the EU 15 prime ministers with his final draft of a pan European constitution, on which Mr Blair and Mr Straw adamantly refuse to allow the British people a referendum.

The whole squalid spectre reflects how far present-day politicians have departed from the old belief that politicians were servants of the electorate and governed only by consent. At long last and very late in the day an almighty row is beginning to brew.

EU laws will Bring Chaos to Hospitals, Say Doctors
by Celia Hall

Hospitals will grind to a halt when European rules on young doctors' working hours come into force next year, the British Medical Association has warned the Government.

Thousands of hours will be lost to the National Health Service when 40,000 junior hospital doctors switch from a 72-hour week to a 58-hour week in line with the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) which comes into force in August 2004.

The Department of Health admitted yesterday that the requirements were "challenging" especially for small hospitals. James Johnson, the chairman of the BMA, told The Daily Telegraph that the rules would lead to the closure of hospital departments and the cancellation of waiting list cases.

"These are the doctors who, in this country, form the backbone of the residents system. It is a big jump from 72 to 58 hours. A huge number of doctors working hours will be taken out of the system. As things stand, it is hard to see which departments hospitals will be able to keep open," he said.

The BMA is having talks with ministers about the impending crisis and Professor Carol Black, the President of the Royal College of Physicians, has also written to the Government on this issue.

The College conducted is own survey of 211 hospitals and found that 116 do not have sufficient numbers of specialist registrars - the doctors in training - to make up new rotas based on the shorter working week.

The College would like the EWTD for junior doctors put back but the BMA believes it should come into force on schedule. Under the changes, the total hours doctors work will be counted differently. From next year all time spent on hospital premises will count, regardless of whether doctors are with patients or asleep on call. Previously sleeping time was not counted.

Mr Johnson, a vascular surgeon from Cheshire, and a former chairman of the BMA's junior doctors' committee, said; "The junior doctors are the main doctors who are resident at nights and weekends. Because of a European Union ruling, it won't matter if you're fast asleep and not working. What will happen next August is a very good question. We are going to have to do something imaginative now if we are not going to have a bit of a disaster."

Doctors asked to work longer hours to plug gaps would be able to take legal action, Mr Johnson added.

"If they don't sort this out, the junior doctors are going to take them to the cleaners under European health and safety legislation," he said. "Trust will have no choice but to close wards down. When you have a melt down in the NHS, all you can do is to stop elective (waiting list) work and give the priorities to the emergencies."

He said that a "knee-jerk" solution would be to consolidate the hospital into a smaller number of larger hospital centers. But that had been ruled out by politicians and the public who like local hospitals even if they were "a few percentage points less safe."
A spokesman for the Department of Health said that the directive did necessitate new ways of working.

"It's a challenge and we will be looking for solutions to improve the quality of care and maintain access to patient services wherever possible," he added.

Hypo/Hyperglycaemia
by Phillip Day

Profile
The brain runs on glucose, claiming up to 30% of the body's production of the essential sugar. 'Blood sugar' levels are vital to the correct functioning of both brain and body. When this delicate balancing act is disrupted, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) or hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) may result, throw both the body and mind into turmoil. It is estimated that 1 in 4 of us may suffer from some form of glucose intolerance, resulting in hypo/hyperglycaemia and, eventually, diabetes mellitus, type 2.

Symptoms
Trembling, anxiety, fatigue, wobbly if hungry, confusion, irritability, palpitations, blurred vision, cold hands and feet, low blood pressure, blackouts, angry outbursts, rambling speech, violence, depression, inappropriate or strange behaviour, forgetfulness, road rage, and an inability to concentrate.

Commentary
When the body has not been fed for some time and blood sugar fuel runs low, the body becomes hungry, inviting the person to consume more nutrients for fuel. The brain triggers the release of adrenalin and the pancreatic hormone glucagon, which in turn provoke the liver into releasing stored glucose (glycogen) in body tissues and the liver to use as fuel. The use of stimulants and the excessive intake of high-glycaemic carbohydrates (bread, sugar, pasta, etc.) disrupt this elegant fuel control system.

Tea, coffee, sucrose, chocolate, junk food, cigarettes and other 'mood enhancers' are constantly reported being available in mental institutions. These also stimulate the production of adrenalin and fool the body into releasing glucose from the liver (glycogen) before it is required. Blood sugar levels soar. Frequent intakes of these foods cause the pancreas to over-produce insulin, the hormone responsible for transporting glucose into the cells. The result is that excess amounts of insulin hormone cause blood sugar levels abruptly to dive. Symptoms of glucose intolerance set in and a vicious cycle is created as more sugar is craved to relieve the symptoms. The end result of this cycle may be low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) or high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia), exhausted pancreas and adrenal glands, and the accompanying physical and mental symptoms described earlier. The end result will usually be diabetes, type 2 (see Diabetes).

The sweetest poison
When it comes to identifying the most common poison we willingly use against ourselves, an amazing feat resulting in millions of deaths worldwide every year, there really is no contest. The perpetrator is as unlikely a candidate as any you might wish to name, and its unmasking is probably all the more horrifying because this substance has burrowed its way into our civilisation like a parasite, draped in the false colours of comfort and familiarity. It has an entire industry behind it as usual, hell-bent on marketing the stuff any way it can. It's whiter than heroin, sweeter than your fiancée, more soluble than the National Debt, and more pernicious than nicotine because, like a true demon, this little beauty comes in a million disguises and always dresses like a friend.

We grew up being brainwashed with all the sayings: "Sugar and spice and all things nice", "Sweetheart", "Sugar-plum" - all painting the white stuff in a comforting, cuddly light. But seeing as we are in the mood for some truth, let's take a hard look at the 's' word. Are you nervous about shattering some highly refined illusions?

Dr William Coda Martin was the first publicly to label sucrose a poison. Martin's definition came about after he determined the classical definition of a poison was "…any substance applied to the body, which causes or may cause disease." So what is sucrose? Obviously the first task we must carry out is identifying exactly what sugar is. Once again, we have to do our homework and pre-empt the vocabulary - so let's define our terms. There are a number of 'sugars' around. Here are the main ones:

Glucose - found with other sugars, but occurs naturally in fruits and vegetables. A number of core foods we consume are converted by our body into glucose, or blood sugar as it is sometimes called, which is the form in which this highly efficient energy source is made available to our life-systems. Glucose is always present in our bloodstream and is a key material in the metabolic functions of all plants and animals.
Dextrose - known as 'corn sugar', is manufactured from starches.
Fructose - natural sugar found in fruits.
Lactose - milk sugar
Maltose - malt sugar
Sucrose - refined sugar manufactured from sugar cane and beet.

The last, sucrose, is the white and brown stuff that goes into the tea, coffee, soft drinks and sodas, and shows up in everything from bread, breakfast cereals, pasta, tomato ketchup to Pot Noodles, doughnuts, Dime Bars and Twinkies. There are few manufactured or processed foods today that do not contain either sucrose, aspartame or saccharin (see Aspartame Disease). Sugar's prevalence for 300 years has made the sweet-hearts in the sugar industry wealthy beyond most people's imaginations. Naturally, the sugar barons are willing to do or say just about anything to keep their products bathed in the safe and neighbourly light that results in the great unwashed scoffing it down by the bushel-box-load.

Sugar bombing
Today's penchant for eating truck-loads of high-energy, refined high-glycaemic carbohydrates, such as pastries, bread, pasta, sweets, etc., washed down with sugary drinks or alcoholic beverages, means that a tremendous amount of excess glucose, which isn't being burnt off as fuel (lack of exercise), has to be dealt with somehow. Initially, as much as possible is stored in the liver and body tissues in the form of glycogen. As more sugar is stuffed into our sagging bodies daily, the liver swells like a balloon to accommodate it, waiting in vain for the garbage truck to take it out of the body (detoxification/ elimination). The truck almost never arrives because we do not detoxify our bodies (sugar has also been linked to constipation). Finally, reaching its limit, the liver has had enough and pours the sucrose toxins it has accumulated back into the bloodstream in the form of fatty acids, which are then taken to storage bins in the inactive areas of the body, namely the belly, thighs, hips, breasts and the backs of our upper arms (triceps area).

Once the inactive storage areas are filled to capacity, the body begins distributing the metabolite acids into the active organs, such as the heart and kidneys. These fats accumulate as rapidly as the sucrose continues to pour in, impairing the functioning of vital organs, causing hormonal imbalance , creating lethargy, abnormal blood pressure as the circulatory and lymph systems are invaded, depleting vital vitamin C reserves, threatening the cardiovascular system. An overabundance of white cells occurs, leading to the retardation of tissue formation. The system is nearing collapse at this point, but still the sugar keeps a-coming….

How about the rampant alcoholic consumption, which in itself leads to chaotic blood sugar patterns and diabetes (see Alcoholism)? How about the cellulite, varicose veins and the rotten teeth? How about the kids bouncing off the walls with mineral depletion, ADD and ADHD because sucrose robs minerals, impairs brain function, resulting in increased emotional instability, concentration difficulties, hyperactivity and violence in the classroom, ending up no doubt with a Ritalin or Prozac prescription, black eyes from fighting, detention, lousy grades… and conceivably a school shooting or two…. (see ADD/ADHD)

Glutamic acid, the key to proper brain function, is derived from a diet rich in unrefined plant dietary. Glutamic acid is broken down by B vitamins into compounds that regulate stop and go functions in the brain. B vitamins however are manufactured by symbiotic bacteria inhabiting our intestines. As the sucrose bombing continues, these bacteria are killed by the toxic sugar metabolites, resulting in a severe depletion of our B-vitamin production and the ongoing explosion of unregulated Candida. The lack of B vitamins in turn impairs brain function. The results in adults can traverse the awesome spectrum from sleepiness and the inability to calculate or remember, through to dizziness , heightened PMS symptoms and possibly finishing with those famous murderous impulses, resulting in your lawyer's "Twinkie Defence" (see Criminal Violence and Diabetes).

And so, as the human becomes the sugar equivalent of the Frankenstein monster, pancreatic and adrenal functions become inhibited by excess sucrose-triggering, resulting in the impairment of pancreatic enzymes such as trypsin and chymotrypsin, vital for arresting healing processes and preventing cancer growths. Sugar may lead to cancer of the breast, ovaries, prostate and rectum (see Cancer). It has been implicated in colon cancer, with an increased risk in women, and is a risk factor in biliary tract cancer. Sugar can cause appendicitis , increase the risk of Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis (see Inflammatory Bowel Disease), cause the rapid overgrowth of yeasts and fungi, thereby exacerbating the symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Excess sugar consumption has also been linked to Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Complete removal of sugar from the diet has seen stunning recoveries from cancer, diabetes, heart illnesses and many other conditions. The average American currently consumes over 100 pounds of sucrose and 40 pounds of corn syrup each year in their deadly addiction to all things sweet.

Take that fibre
Dietary fibre is vital to slow down the absorption of sugars, as well as performing all the bowel duties expected of a great meal. Drs. Murray and Pizzorno explain:

"The term 'dietary fibre' refers to the components of the plant cell wall as well as the indigestible residues from plant foods. Different types of fibre possess different actions. The water-soluble forms exert the most beneficial effects on blood sugar control. Included in this category are hemicelluloses, mucilages, gums, and pectin substances. These types of fibres are capable of: slowing the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, thereby preventing rapid rises in blood sugar; increasing cell sensitivity to insulin, thereby preventing the excessive secretion of insulin; and improving uptake of glucose by the liver and other tissues, thereby preventing a sustained elevation of blood sugar."

Various diseases, such as hypoglycaemia, diabetes, syndrome X, migraine headaches, PMS and many of the heart complaints may be viewed as the body's attempts to react and adjust to the modern, highly refined, nutrient-poor diet of our times. Those suffering from hypoglycaemia or diabetes (type 2) may benefit from the following:

· DIET: COMMENCE THE FOOD FOR THOUGHT LIFESTYLE REGIMEN, ensuring the patient cuts out junk foods, especially sodas and soft drinks, sucrose, high glycaemic carbohydrates, such as ALL GRAINS (pasta, bread, rice, pastries, etc.) and potatoes
· DIET: Give up the foods and beverages listed in the Foods to avoid section, especially alcoholic drinks, ESPECIALLY BEERS AND LAGERS
· DIET: If fungi and yeasts have become a problem, switch to the ANTI-CANDIDA LIFESTYLE REGIMEN (See section on Candida)
· VITAL: Increase water intake to four pints (2 litres) per day
· VITAL: Regular exercise (at least one hour per day, four times per week)
· COMMENCE THE BASIC SUPPLEMENT PROGRAM, ensuring ANTI-CANDIDA/FUNGAL SUPPLEMENTATION, where appropriate. Also:
· Zinc (gluconate), 25 mg, twice per day
· Vanadium or chromium picolinate, 200 mcg a day, taken every other day, two weeks on, two weeks off. Note: do not continue this supplement over a protracted period of time
· Manganese, 10 mg, twice per day

Acne
by Phillip Day

Profile
Blackheads, whiteheads, nodules and cysts. Most of us, especially the fellas, know all the bad news. Ladies too fall prone to this most unsightly of conditions, which usually contrives to show up the morning before a first date with the captain of the football team. There are three types of acne:

Acne vulgaris: a common disease caused by increased testosterone release, usually during puberty, which leads to an over-secretion of oils and waxes (sebum) produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin. Testosterone during puberty also stimulates the production of keratin proteins in the skin which can also block pores. Outbreaks usually occur on the face, but also on the back, shoulders and chest.
Acne conglobata: a more severe form of the above which can result in cysts and scarring from deep pustules which accumulate pus compounds which do not discharge their contents to the surface but infect surrounding tissue.
Acne rosacea: a condition that occurs in middle age (usually between ages 30-50), where the face becomes flushed and covered with pimples, similar to the above acne vulgaris. Thought to be caused variously by menopausal imbalances, fungal/parasite infection, metabolic imbalances, digestive problems and malnutrition, usually a shortage of the B-vitamins.

Commentary
There's nothing much you can do about reaching puberty, except to think dark thoughts, endlessly play those awful Marilyn Manson or Christine Aguilera records and ponder how the CIA is going to do you in. But I've got a better idea about how to combat the main problems surrounding acne. The chief culprit here is malnutrition and an excess of sugars, transfats and fried foods in the diet which depress your immunity, destroy enzymes and cause all sorts of anti-social goo to ooze its way to liberty.

As usual, physicians will throw Roaccutane, tretinoin, benzoyl peroxide and antibiotics at the problem, which can variously cause suicidal tendencies, depression, burnt skin, peeled and crusty skin, a compromised immune system, or an outbreak of our old Jekyll and Hydian horror, Candida albicans, a normally beneficial yeast with dark, Napoleonic ambitions for the total control of your organism.

The key to defeating acne in puberty is to understand one basic fact: your body is going through some pivotal changes and it needs the right type of fuel to accomplish these without punishing you with the downside. Teenagers are normally quite rebellious about their diets (rumour has it), and don't often listen to what Mum says about all those tempting veggies. They prefer instead to dine out at Chez Kebab, Kentucky Fried Rat, Murder King and the Golden Starches.

Take action
So, if you are a teen, and you have a hot date and a face full of Martian landscape, you have a choice: either continue to be rebellious with your diet and lifestyle, in which case you will be spending most of the evening whispering sweet nothings in her ear through the visor of your crash helmet, or TAKE ACTION (I love those words!) and wade in amongst the following:

· DIET: COMMENCE THE ANTI-CANDIDA DIETARY REGIMEN for a period of 28 days and then review results. If satisfactory, switch to THE FOOD FOR THOUGHT LIFESTYLE REGIMEN thereafter
· DIET: Avoid processed foods, fried foods, sugars, dairy products, hydrogenated oils (margarine, etc.) and sweets/candy
· DIET: Avoid oils and greases as far as possible at work if you are industrially-minded
· DIET: Drink 4 pints of clean, non-tap water a day (a still mineral water sold in glass bottles is fine)
· DETOXIFICATION: Consider reviewing your continued use of existing medications, over the counter topicals, steroidal or corticosteroidal medications
· DETOXIFICATION: Clear your pipework out with a magnesium oxide bowel cleanse
· DETOXIFICATION: Use safe personal care products (see Environmental Toxins) and wash face and body using a non-irritant formula
· RESTORE NUTRIENT BALANCE: COMMENCE THE BASIC SUPPLEMENT PROGRAM

UK Fluoride Blues
by Professor Paul Connett

The news from the UK keeps flooding in as the Blair government attempts to foist fluoridation on an unsuspecting British public. The two local news reports printed below fall into a familiar propaganda pattern (and the Blair government is good at propaganda).

Local dentists or dental groups use largely unpublished small studies of dental decay (with little or no control for economic level which is a more critical predictor of tooth decay than lack of fluoride) to 'hype the magic bullet' of water fluoridation. They nearly always work in percentages which completely obscure the minimal (if any) saving in tooth surfaces involved, even if such savings were actually statistically significant, which they often are not.

For example the famous Brunelle and Carlos study from 1990 (the largest ever carried out in the US looking at 39,000 children in 84 communities) found a saving of 18% of the tooth surfaces (average for 5-17 year olds) living all their lives in fluoridated as opposed to non-fluoridated communities. This was championed by the authors as demonstrating the benefits of fluoridation. However, hold the applause. Not only did they not report a statistical significance (if any) of these results but the 18% saving amounted to only 0.6 of one tooth surface out of 128 tooth surfaces in a child's mouth - in other words an absolute saving of less than 0.5% of their tooth surfaces!

And what are the risks? None according to the expert quoted in one of these articles, "Dr Garnett said she had no evidence to suggest fluoride had any adverse health effects." Which is another way of saying that she hasn't read the literature.

Fortunately, the latest issue of The Ecologist has printed two hard-hitting articles on the dangers of fluoridation, so at least some people will be warned. Unfortunately, it is too late to influence the House of Lords, which incredibly voted to modify the water bill to allow water companies (which fluoridate) to be exempt from litigation. Peer pressure?

This issue of The Ecologist also contains an excellent article by Sally Fallon on the important work of Dr Western Price, who showed among many things that so called 'primitive peoples' had excellent teeth and health prior to the imposition of Western sugary diets.

PS:

Fluoridation Victories

Some very exciting news from Korea just in from the Korean National Coalition Against Fluoridation. Not only have four city councils (Chongju (pop. 500,000), Pohang (pop. 500,000), Gwacheon (pop. 70,000) and Uiwang stopped fluoridating their water, but also the Korean Medical Association as well as the Korean Pharmaceutical Association have withdrawn their support for this practice.

This news, coming a few months after Basel, Switzerland halted fluoridation after 41 years of the practice, is further evidence that this practice is losing what little international support it ever had. The English speaking countries are getting more and more isolated in their obstinate pursuit of this obsolete form of medicine.

Heartiest congratulations to our Korean colleagues.

Health chiefs call for fluoride boost

Health bosses are calling for fluoride in water supplies across Chorley and South Ribble to be boosted to stop childrens' teeth rotting.

Dental experts say the area has only seen a three per cent improvement in the number of missing, decayed and filled teeth, compared to a national improvement of 11 per cent. And they are worried the districts won't be able to meet the 2003 national target of an average of no more than one decayed, missing or filled tooth per 12 year old.

Now they want to increase the levels of fluoride in water supplies. In a report to the Chorley and South Ribble Primary Care Trust, public health director Shelagh Garnett and consultant in dental public health Gary Whittle, recommended the board support fluoridation.

They say in seven wards in Chorley and six in South Ribble, each child would have an average of at least one and a half fewer teeth affected by decay if the water was fluoridated. Fluoride is partially absorbed into the enamel of the teeth, helping it resist acid from sugary food.

The experts say this would reduce the number of children suffering from pain and swelling and cut down on the 400 general anaesthetics administered yearly for tooth extractions.

The trust board will now work with local authority officials to gauge public opinion on the matter.

But a move to fluoridate the water would prompt a protest from the National Pure Water Association and the North West Council Against Fluoridation. They claim fluoride is the toxic waste of the phosphate industry and a grade two poison. But Dr Garnett said she had no evidence to suggest fluoride had any adverse health effects.

She said: "Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral. We are not suggesting putting something in that isn't there. We are suggesting raising the level of a natural substance. Fluoride alone won't have any effect - it must go hand in hand with a better diet and better oral hygiene."

Japan a Food Colony of U.S.

Journalist Yoichiro Aonuma warns in The Dangers of Being a Food Colony (Bungei Shunju) that Japan is facing food safety problems because it has become a 'food colony' of the United States. Japan's food self-sufficiency ratio stands at less than 40% in calorie terms, and the country relies heavily on U.S. imports to make up the difference. The Japanese would starve without food from the United States, explains Aonuma.

As the products must be transported over long distances in journeys lasting many hours, imports are treated with post-harvest chemicals. Japan's pesticide residue limits and other regulatory standards for foodstuffs that are imported largely from the United States - such as beef, potatoes, wheat, and corn - are set to conform with what suits America, criticises Aonuma.

Australia: In the year 2000, the CEO of Woolworths said that within 10 years ALL OF AUSTRALIA'S FOOD WOULD BE IMPORTED!!! So Australia's food, too, will be treated with post-harvest chemicals. This is a plan supported by both Labor and Liberal Parties in that country.

India Orders an Inquiry Into 'Toxic Soft Drinks' Claim
by Paul Brown

The Indian government has ordered an investigation into why an analysis of 12 brands of cold drinks owned and marketed by Coca-Cola and Pepsi allegedly found that they contained on average more than 30 times the EU legal limit for pesticides.

The allegations are bound to seriously damage the fast expanding soft drinks market in India, which sells 6.5 billion bottles a year.

The chemicals identified - including DDT, which is banned in Europe and the US - are blamed for birth defects and cancer.

In a display of unity, MPs from both the ruling coalition and the opposition called for further investigations after the report by the independent New Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).

The health minister, Sushma Swaraj, said the findings were startling, and the government had ordered a comprehensive investigation. "I will collect all the facts and come back to the House," he told MPs.

Both Coca-Cola and Pepsi strenuously denied the claims. They said the report was "baseless".

The tests were conducted by CSE's pollution monitoring laboratory in New Delhi, on bottles of drinks allegedly bought in the Indian capital.

The laboratory said it acquired bottles of Pepsi and Coca-Cola manufactured in the United States, where strict controls are enforced, and using identical testing methods, found no residues.

Coca-Cola and Pepsi in India have a virtual monopoly and market 12 brands aggressively to the growing numbers of middle- and upper-class children who can afford them.

These brands, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Diet Pepsi, Mirinda orange, Mirinda lemon, Blue Pepsi, 7-Up, Coca-Cola, Fanta, Limca, Sprite and Thums Up, contain 86% to 90% water.

They were dubbed toxic yesterday by Down to Earth, the CSE's magazine.

CSE said it tested the drinks for organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides and synthetic pyrethroids - all commonly used in India as insecticides. It claimed that all samples contained residues of four extremely toxic pesticides and insecticides: lindane, DDT, malathion and chlorpyrifos. In all samples, the claimed levels of pesticide residues far exceeded the EU's maximum residue limit for pesticides in drinking water.

Down to Earth claimed that "each sample had enough poison to cause, in the long term, cancer, damage to the nervous and reproductive systems, birth defects and severe disruption of the immune system."

Coca-Cola and Pepsi, the two leading brands, had almost similar concentrations of residues. Soft drinks have been exempted from India's food regulations.

Down to Earth said: "It is clear that the regulations have been designed in total disregard for public health."

After the allegations were published the two companies came together for a rare joint news conference.

Rajeev Bakshi, Pepsi India's chief executive, told reporters: "The report is baseless. We conform to the best international norms. We're open to our product being tested anywhere in the world by an independent and accredited laboratory." Sanjiv Gupta, president of Coca-Cola India, said: "We test our brands very regularly in top-grade laboratories in India and abroad," he said.

The laboratory decided to do the tests on locally marketed soft drinks after bottled water sold in India was found to contain toxic residues.

"Encouraging that this organisation is dedicated to these issues - we seem to live in a society that has become complacent and this will not get things done!" - Trina H., Hampshire, UK.

"You are a cure for ignorance!" - Angelo D-B., New South Wales, Australia

"Total health for all can only become a reality when all those involved become responsible, i.e. the doctors, the alternative health practitioners and, most importantly, the individuals themselves, working in unison for the good of all. The pharmaceutical giants would then have their life-blood supply terminated and be where they should have been all along - at the bottom of the list as a very last option." - Sheila T., Gloucestershire, UK

"Thank you for an excellent seminar." - Dave K., Essex, UK

"Loved Mr Day's tapes. I just wish they had a Spanish version (translation), so I can share them with all my friends." - Alma K., WI, USA

"Every single citizen of the UK needs to know the truth about the suppressive and evil intentions of the EU. We must take control before it's too late. We owe it to ourselves - our children's futures are in our hands." - Paul H., North Yorkshire, UK

"I work with the pioneer of canine hydrotherapy and I run the nutritional supplement that we have at the pool. I think that it is absolutely fantastic and I applaud your mission. I especially like the information on veterinary medicine that you offer. There is so much collusion between "big pharma" and the world of medicine for both people and animals and I like to support those entities that support the truth." - Sherry B., CA, USA

"After being introduced to Phillip Day's philosophies by an old friend I find my quest for knowledge is exceeding by the minute. I feel it is my obligation now to pass this information on to friends and family." - Greg B., Queensland, Australia

Why Are So Many Toddlers Obese?

More than 60 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Many U.S. toddlers are also obese and are even showing signs of diabetes and other diseases associated with obesity, according to researchers. Moreover, when obese children were sent to specialists they still did not achieve healthier weights.

Researchers examined the medical records of 385 children, most of whom were already obese, defined as being in the 85th percentile for weight. The children were seen by endocrinologists, or hormone specialists, between 1984 and 2002.
Although the parents were educated on proper diet and exercise for their children as well as advised to meet with a dietician, after two years the children weighed, on average, even more than before.

According to researchers, it is clear that referral to paediatric endocrinologists and dieticians is not effective in treating childhood obesity. Instead, they suggest a weight-loss program that includes the children, parents and the school system.

The children in the study, some as young as 4 years old, also had high insulin levels, which can lead to type 2 diabetes, and 13 percent of 147 children tested had abnormal liver function tests, according to researchers. Such tests indicate a common condition with obesity known as fatty liver, which can lead to cirrhosis.

People who are obese or overweight have an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers.

PHILLIP DAY'S COMMENT: Obesity and ill-health are the predictable harvests for a civilisation obsessed with eating processed, devitalised foods laden with sugar. Furthermore, who is surprised that the medical industry can't seem to put a dent in these shocking statistics when they do not train their doctors in nutrition?

Conventional Medicine
Far Riskier Than Supplements
by Barbara Sumner Burstyn

The panic over the blanket recall of alternative treatments manufactured by Pan Pharmaceuticals was way out of proportion to the facts.

Hands up if you threw out all your vitamins last month just to be on the safe side, after it was discovered that the Australian Company Pan Pharmaceuticals had serious deficiencies in manufacturing and quality control.

When the dust settled, though, just one product from Pan, an over-the-counter travel sickness tablet, had caused harm. But the tarnish quickly spread to the supplement industry as a whole, as a blanket recall caused people to doubt not only the effectiveness of vitamins and supplements but their safety.

We may have been looking in the wrong direction. While the Pan medication put 19 Australians in hospital, and others suffered unspecified harmful reactions, there were no reports of such incidents in New Zealand. At least not relating to legally produced vitamins and supplements, even though an estimated half of New Zealanders take them.

Rather according to the Ministry of Health, more than 650 New Zealanders die each year from highly preventable reactions to pharmaceutical medicines (in the United States the number exceeds 106,000).

So given that no one has died in New Zealand from taking legal, over-the-counter supplements, and harmful reactions are rare, why the disproportionate media fuss over Pan Pharmaceuticals?

And why the calls to increase regulation of an industry that already has more than 20 acts, regulations and codes of practice in place. And why the advisory from the ministry telling people to discard their supplements if they were at all unsure?

If you ask alternative medicine proponents, they'll relate a saga that sounds like a conspiracy theory gone wild: from manipulation of the media by the pharmaceutical industry to overt and covert efforts to flout law, discredit and otherwise damage the reputation of natural remedies.

They talk even of pharmaceutical companies taking over the nutritional supplements market and working to reduce the legal potency of products so as to make them ineffective.

After all, the alternative practitioners argue, the global pharmaceutical industry is the most profitable on earth and depends on a steady supply of sick people. It all sounds ridiculous, right?

Not according to the latest edition of the British Medical Journal. It's entirely devoted to claims that patients and governments are being systematically misled by pharmaceutical companies. Its dissection of the industry reveals how research is being compromised, and exposes the tactics used to promote new drugs and the relationships between the world's leading pharmaceutical companies and supposedly independent medical journals and family doctors.

Then there's the dietary Supplement Safety Bill being introduced in the US. Backed by the pharmaceutical industry, the legislation, if passed, will effectively medicalise the dietary supplement industry, forcing most manufacturers out of business, allowing a pharmaceutical take over of the industry.

Or the Codex Alimentarius Commission, Run by the United Nations. Codex is empowered to set standards of operation for the health industry. Strangely, 90% of representation is from multinational pharmaceutical corporations but the supplement industry and the general public are barred from attending.

Codex is working to control such things as the sale of dietary supplements for preventative or therapeutic reasons and the potency of natural remedies. It also seeks to convert definitions of many supplements to drugs and to make its rules binding on every UN member nation.

In Germany and Norway, where the Codex proposals are already enshrined in law, even Vitamin C (above 200 mg) is illegal, except by prescription and then only from the pharmaceutical company that supplies the medical system. But first you need to have convinced your doctor that you need it.

All this is happening despite recent reports such as that from Harvard University on the prevention of cancer of the colon. The longitudinal study of nearly 100,000 nurses over 20 years shows that folic acid supplements reduce cancer of the colon by a huge 75 to 80 %.

At the same time, the John Hopkins Medical Center's nutrition department has stated that, based on studies where people take a supplement, Vitamin E seems to reduce risk of some cancers by 60 to 70 % and the risk of heart disease by 80 to 90 %.

But perhaps the pharmaceutical industry, despite its power, is just a little worried. Last week the New York Times reported that the Pharmaceuticals Research and Manufacturers of America would increase its lobbying budget by 23% to US$150 million (259 million) in the coming year. Its budget includes more than US$2.5 million for such things as "intellectual echo chambers of economists and thought leaders" (read journalists), and for the placement of articles by third parties and media relations consultants.

The agency also set aside US$ 12.3 million to develop coalitions and strategic alliances with doctors, patients, universities and influential members of minority groups. Pinch me, I am dreaming. Doesn't this sound evil to you?

The bottom line is that you're 26,000 times more likely to die from properly researched, regulated, prescribed and used drugs than dietary supplements. Whether those supplements are effective, preventative measures, you will have to decide for yourself. But some how the behaviour of the pharmaceutical companies makes me suspicious that the researchers at Harvard and John Hopkins and all those vitamin and mineral advocates might be right after all.

So just to be on the safe side, I'm taking my vitamins-- while I can still get them.

Up Close and Personal
An Interview with CTM's Chief Executive, Phillip Day

ECLUB: I understand congratulations are in order.

PHILLIP DAY: Thank you. Samantha and I had our wedding last Sunday in Kent, England. It was an absolutely magical experience. Also the hottest day on record in English history! And thanks to all our friends across the world who sent in their best wishes. We have both been extremely moved.

ECLUB: And where are you on the end of this telephone exactly?

PHILLIP DAY: Rome.

ECLUB: It says something about you both that you are prepared to do an interview with us on your honeymoon.

PHILLIP DAY: I know. We need to get a life.

ECLUB: So once you're off vacation, what then?

PHILLIP DAY: We have the September release of my new book, The ABC's of Disease, which is being released in Australia and New Zealand at the beginning of November.

ECLUB: How does this differ from what you have done before?

PHILLIP DAY: We've thrown the net much wider to encompass a fantastically broad range of diseases. Each illness gets a separate section, complete with what these disorders are, what you can do about them and how to avoid them. We have comprehensive, nutritional and lifestyle strategies for the lot. It's a work we intend expanding over the coming years into an encyclopaedia of the world's major and minor diseases.

ECLUB: That's quite some task.

PHILLIP DAY: Samantha says I'm still young enough.

ECLUB: And you have two new tours coming up.

PHILLIP DAY: Yes. From 1st September to the end of October, we are doing an ABC's of Disease presentation throughout Britain and Ireland. At the beginning of November, we are taking the talk to Australia, New Zealand and Singapore for the remainder of the year.

ECLUB: What can people expect to get out of these seminars?

PHILLIP DAY: A piece of wedding cake. Also, a greatly increased knowledge of the many disorders that may afflict our families and friends in the future, and most importantly, how to treat them using simple methods, and of course avoid them altogether. The presentation won't be complicated at all. Everything's more or less reduced to the nuts and bolts of the matter.

I think one of the great benefits people will get from the talks and book will also be a tremendous release of the fear of disease. To many, diabetes is a scary and often debilitating illness leading to heart conditions, blindness and those terrible faintings you sometimes see in restaurants. Diabetes is only frightening because few people know more than, for example, CNN tells them in their short-attention-span bulletins. News information on diseases is invariably misleading, and often just plain wrong. During the process of putting The ABC's together, I have been able to hone my long-standing contempt of profit-driven orthodoxy's ability to solve our major health problems. The slate-faced incompetence and greed of big business, Codex, the EU, etc. unfortunately tarnish the whole spectrum from A to Z… or, to be more precise, from acne to varicose veins.

Lucky for us, we have great men and women of medicine who are breaking ranks daily to get the word out that these major conditions can be made to go away if we are diligent and consistent about confronting them using natural, metabolic and detoxification methods. I report their words. Almost all of these disorders can end today based entirely on existing scientific knowledge.

ECLUB: The fluoridation situation is a case in point, isn't it?

PHILLIP DAY: Precisely. Heavy industry is trying to sell you their massively toxic fluorosilicate industrial wastes allegedly to strengthen your teeth, when, if you want fine teeth, all you really need to do is boycott the sugar industry.

One of the other major benefits to the forthcoming talks and book is the uniformity of the regimens used to combat a whole range of illnesses. I will also be featuring some exciting recent information on the extent to which fungal and yeast disorders are underpinning some of our major death statistics, and what can be done about these critters.

ECLUB: Where can people go to find out more information on the tour and book?

PHILLIP DAY: Full information is available at www.credence.org, just click 'Meeting Schedule'. Tickets are available there too. I am certainly looking forward to the next few months.

ECLUB: Are you sipping a Martini at the moment?

PHILLIP DAY: Actually, I'm trying to dodge a murderous Italian Lambretta.

ECLUB: Have a great couple of weeks' off. You've both earned them.

PHILLIP DAY: Many thanks!
