Up Close and Personal
The Monthly Interview with CTM Founder Phillip Day

ECLUB: Where on Earth are you calling from today?
PD: Oklahoma City, USA, the Sooner State.
ECLUB: How's the good ole US of A?
PD: Samantha and I are having a fantastic time. The driving has been harsh on occasions because of the distance, but we have crossed the beautiful deserts of Utah, splashed around in the streams of the Rockies, perused the art in Aspen, visited my brother's family in California, and broke the speed-limit once in Nevada.
ECLUB: Well, you've been hearing about the European elections, no doubt.
PD: Yes and I am delighted. For the benefit of those just joining us, there has been a significant swing in the recent elections that has highlighted concerns about the fraud, double-dealing, and flat-out corruption going on in the EU. Those worried about the vitamin and herbal directives which seek to ban or severely restrict the public's European access to many nutrients as of July 2005 are quite a few steps closer to their redemption. Pressured by the pharmaceutical industry, EU jobsworths have been trying to protect us from wicked vitamins, minerals and herbs. Most haven't been fooled and know this is merely a corporate coup d'état of the alternative health industry by the drug boys since millions have chosen to desert most drugs in favour of a healthier lifestyle.
ECLUB: Of course, the problems in the European Union are about so much more than just health.
PD: Many did not get engaged with the subject of what the EU actually is for a long time. The prominent showing of the UK Independence Party in the recent elections has thrown a total spook into the Communist machine in Brussels. UKIP seeks to withdraw Britain from the EU and sign a free trade agreement with the nations of Europe to allow business to continue as usual. This arrangement is currently enjoyed by Switzerland and Norway. The idea that Britain, the fourth largest economy by GDP in the world, will suffer by not being 'at the centre of Europe' is frankly idiotic. Britain's £1.3 million an hour contribution into EU coffers for no appreciable benefit and a sack-load of useless regulations is now being recognised by many for the scandal it is. Who wants to be ruled by people you cannot sack? Who wants to be ruled by unaccountable, unelected foreign committees anyway?
ECLUB: People thought you were crazy when you first started putting out this message in 'Let's Fix Britain'.
PD: Perhaps, but freedom is an idea whose time has now come. I say, let's get those useless British politicians out onto the street and turn the bulls of Pamplona loose on them. And if they don't come up to scratch, let them deservedly get the horns in their backsides for their sluggardly ways. Hooray for Kilroy-Silk. Hooray for Nigel Farage and the others at UKIP. Hooray even for Joan Collins, who bothered to get behind so worthy a cause and trumpet the truth from the rooftops.
ECLUB: Unleash her with the bulls of Pamplona also?
PD: Don't be silly, Brian. She runs like a girl.
ECLUB: So what do you have for us this month?
PD: The aspartame lawsuit has now been filed, and we give an update on the dangers of this most pernicious of 'sweeteners'. Then there's 'why death rates decrease when doctors go on strike' - Australian doctors, not Israelis, this time! Then drug firm threatens families who are pressing a lawsuit over MMR damage to their kids. More on bully-boy tactics from a corporation stuck in the limelight over this vaccine débâcle.
I am commencing two series in this issue. One on 'School as Programmed Retardation', highlighting the dangers of how our children are taught today, which will also include the school shooting incidents, dyslexia, and the mandatory drugging up of millions of children who have been told they have a condition only drugs can solve. We also begin a part-work of Steve Ransom's excellent Wake up to Health in the 21st Century, one of my favourite books of the year (www.credence.org), which gets into vaccinations and the general scam that masquerades as the 'infectious' disease industry today… I could go on and on…
ECLUB: And you've frequently been known to.
PD: Plus, we have the brand new tour coming up.
ECLUB: The Break Free tour - tell us about it. UK, Ireland and then off to Australia and New Zealand with it, aren't you?
PD: I'm very excited at the prospect of a full-on assault against the media. I think most of the reporting that goes on is puerile and unnecessary. Who brings the media to account? No-one. Break Free is all about a mental spring-cleaning of attitude and purpose. We're going to fly-by the biggies as usual, such as cancer, heart disease, etc., so newcomers won't miss out, but to our long-standing supporters, Break Free will cover lots of exciting new ground and will motivate listeners through the roof with the central, core message: Make Good Choices.
ECLUB: Where are you speaking tonight?
PD: Minneapolis/St Pauls in Minnesota, USA.
ECLUB: Have a great time. And come back safely.
PD: If we don't, then I lost Samantha somewhere in the cavernous Mall of America with the company credit card and her mobile switched off.

EU Whistleblower Wins a Seat in Brussels
by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

Anti-Brussels crusaders made their first breakthrough in the European elections yesterday with the victory of Paul van Buitenen, the Dutch whistleblower whose anti-Brussels crusaders made their first big breakthrough in the European elections revelations brought down the European Commission in 1999.

Catching the Dutch media off-guard, Mr van Buitenen's new Europa Transparant party won 7.3 percent of the national vote, securing two of the country's 27 seats. Starved of press coverage and excluded from televised debates, he relied on word of mouth and the Internet to spread his message.

Holland has released an early tally of Thursday's vote, defying a security diktat imposed by Brussels until Sunday night after polls have closed across all 25 European Union states. Britain is obeying the ban.

The count shows a slight swing to the Labour opposition as the centre-Right coalition paid a price for economic recession and for supporting the Iraq war.

Mr van Buitenen - a Eurocleaner, not a Eurosceptic - triggered the resignation of the Commission for fraud, nepotism and dirty tricks. He was an auditor at the time and was suspended on half-pay and disciplined for breaching staff rules by revealing abuses to Euro-MPs after his superiors tried to cover them up.

He has carried on the fight, claiming that nothing has changed under the new team and the villains of the 1999 scandal have been shielded by the old-boy network in Brussels, in some cases moving on to top posts. He will now have a staff, ample resources and a platform on the parliament's budget watchdog. "I know all the questions that have to be asked and I'm going to get some answers," he said.

Dutch voters have become increasingly tetchy about Brussels now that they are the biggest net contributors to the EU budget.

Sensing the new mood, the government has begun demanding the "repatriation" of farm aid and regional funds which make up 80 percent of EU spending.

A new book by Mr van Buitenen, In the Brussels Trenches, is a scathing indictment of reforms by Neil Kinnock, the commission vice-president in charge of the Eurocracy - and briefly his boss with an office just down the corridor.

Mr Kinnock took over in 1999 pledging to pull the commission out of 40 years of "frozen bureaucracy", but the book accuses him of shielding miscreants and preserving the system of fiefdoms run by EU insiders to suit themselves.

"Neil Kinnock is the real antagonist of my book. His reforms are a huge hoax. There's no use in putting new rules into place when the real problem is total failure to enforce the rules we already had," said Mr. Van Buitenen.

He said Mr Kinnock ignored warnings that millions of euros were vanishing into illegal slush funds at the EU's data office, Eurostat, until the scandal broke in the press. To this day nobody has taken political responsibility for the affair.

Mr Kinnock's spokesman said the reforms were transforming the management culture of the commission's 20,000 staff, ensuring that no Eurostat-style scandal could happen again.

Mr van Buitenen accuses the EU's new anti-fraud office Olaf of swallowing evidence into a black hole and misusing the criminal justice system to seize the source files of a German journalist who had exposed Olaf corruption.

'Ill Feeling Towards the EU Could Reach
the Point Where it Threatens the EU Itself'

Ireland's Minister for Europe, Dick Roche, criticised the national media for not reporting on a conference for EU ministers held in his own constituency. He told Tim O'Brien of the Irish Times (12/04) that he had 'apologized to delegates for the lack of media interest at the conclusion of the conference.'

He was particularly critical of RTE, given all the taxpayers' money it gets.

The 'Communicating Europe' conference was not, however, completely ignored by the media. The Sunday Business Post (11/04) had a useful piece on it by Sean MacCarthaigh and an editorial.

The conference, we were told, asked basic questions including, 'why is the EU so unpopular?'

The editorial continued: "What emerged with alarming rapidity was the mammoth scale of the problem. Right across the continent, there is a significant, growing gulf between the citizens and the institutions supposed to serve them."

Ministers who cannot completely ignore voters, but 'face regular referendums on European Treaties, expressed their deepest fears at the gathering.' They stated that if all this continued, "the ill-feeling towards the EU could reach the point where it threatened the EU itself."

Turnout
Indeed, Mr Roche admitted that, "Declining voter turnout in the European Parliament elections, persistently negative media and declining support in opinion polls all suggest that the European Union no longer enjoys a positive image."

This was some understatement! And the reference to 'persistently negative media comment' may puzzle Irish readers. Perhaps the Minister was describing the media in other countries.

Here was a glimpse of deep ill-feeling towards the EU, right across Europe. It was a view the Irish media rarely allow us to see. The Minister should have been glad that most of our media ignored the conference.

In his Business Post piece, Sean MacCarthaigh poked fun at the EU ministers for being 'addicted to jargon'. He gave as an example their references to 'Europe's 'infopoints and carrefours network' and even 'understanding the dynamics of the citizen administration interface.'

Mr MacCarthaigh, however, came close to jargon himself when he said that the real problem with the EU is "a massive democratic deficit at the heart of Europe." He meant that the EU has a major impact on the daily lives of millions of people, but these people feel utterly powerless to bring about any change. This is because "at every step, national governments have ensured that they, rather than their voters, hold the power."

Surely this topic deserves more attention from the media?

Lorry Crash Highlights Wheel Risk

An accident on a dual carriageway involving a horsebox has highlighted a danger that originates in a seemingly crazy EU law standardising the direction of wheel nuts.

Event rider Carolyn Gardiner was driving on the A34 with two horses; High Robins, an advanced eventer previously ridden by Bumble Thomas, and a mare, Penny accompanied by a friend. At 45-50mph, without warning, the nearside rear wheels came off.

"The lorry went all over the road," says Carol. "It hit the kerb and turned over."

Driver and passenger climbed out of the windscreen void. High Robins stood up, and Penny was up seconds later. Carolyn was bruised and Penny had flesh wounds, but miraculously there were no other injuries.

All the tyres and wheel hubs were intact; the wheel nuts had simply come unscrewed. Yet the lorry passed its annual Goods Vehicle Test seven weeks and had since done only 130 miles. Before the test, its nuts had been tightened.

Gaby Sayers, a crash recovery expert, provides an explanation for this type of accident. "Quite a common occurrence," he says, "that is rooted in EU bureaucracy."

He explains: "Before we joined the EU, goods vehicle wheels were fixed on with cone-backed nuts, which went into cone-shaped recesses. The nuts on the offside had right-hand threads; those on the nearside had left-hand threads. This prevented the nuts from coming unscrewed. Then wheel designs were standardised. All nuts, both offside and nearside, now have right-hand threads.

When wheels are fitted, contact surfaces must be spotless. A speck of dirt, rust or paint forms a high spot, and the wheel may not bed down properly. The wheel becomes loose. With loose right-hand thread nuts on offside wheels, driving tends to tighten them; on the nearside it loosens them. Wheels do come off, often in the first 100-200 miles after a service."

Bruce Wofford, who owns an international transport firm, says: "We have to be very careful, and have our vehicles serviced every six weeks. A right-hand thread isn't a problem unless the vehicle is poorly maintained but horse owners don't always know to check the nuts frequently."

Wheel trims over the nuts can hide damage, and Gaby recommends taking them off and using a set of yellow arrowheads, available from motoring retailers. For each adjacent pair of nuts, these are clipped on with the arrowheads pointing at each other. If a nut comes unscrewed, it can be spotted and re-tightened.

UKIP Vote Shows Perils of Patronising the Public
Letters to the Editor

Intellectual snobbery from all the main parties aimed at the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and its supporters has been rife during the European election campaigns (report and leading article, June 14th). They have all assumed that the great unwashed are simply not clever enough to grasp the real issues of Europe. The political élite has forgotten that we simple-minded people usually have a simple-minded approach to what the real issues are.

We expect fair-play and common sense. We expect our taxes to be spent prudently and sensibly and we expect honesty and integrity from our politicians. Those who voted UKIP feel angry at the complete failure of the bureaucrats in Brussels to stem the massive amount of fraud and corruption taking place in their organization. We feel angry at the plethora of rules and regulations handed down by the EU and we seem to be the only country that abides by them and go on to employ a small army of officials to enforce them.

These issues are as easily understood by one with a secondary modern education as any Oxbridge graduate. We are not so dim-witted as to believe that the EU will now collapse as a result of our vote, but we take a lot of satisfaction in knowing that we have demonstrated our contempt for those politicians and social commentators who insist on patronising us in this way.

Brussels Safety Rules 'Will Raise Car Prices by £3,000'
by Paul Marston

A new car could cost at least £3,000 more over the next four years because of the European Union safety and Environmental directives, manufacturers said today.

They accused Brussels of imposing 'contradictory' obligations on designers, which were likely to push up prices on best-selling models by 25 to 35 per cent. The European Commission is requiring companies to re-design car fronts so that pedestrians are less likely to be killed or seriously injured if they are knocked over. At the same time, it is insisting that new cars must produce 25 per cent less carbon dioxide emissions by 2008, compared with levels in 1995. The reduction achieved so far is about 10 per cent.

Manufacturers say the requirements pull in opposite directions, as safety innovations such as impact absorbing bonnets and more sophisticated braking and stability systems tend to add weight. This increases the need for a more powerful engine, which is likely to entail higher emissions rather than lower.

Solutions would involve much greater cost and this would have to be passed to consumers, senior industry figures said at the Motor Show in Birmingham.

A third EU regulation, covering the re-cycling of scrapped vehicles from 2007, will be a further financial burden, said the producers.

Roger Putnam, the chief executive of Ford UK, said the tensions between the different directives virtually required engineers to 'defy the laws of physics'. He predicted that the directives could add 5,000 euros (about £3,300) to showroom prices for a typical European car. The average price for the top10 sellers in Britain last year was about £10,500.

Kevin Wale, the chairman of Vauxhall Motors, said the industry was struggling against a 'tidal wave' of red tape from Brussels and Whitehall.

On a visit to the show, Patricia Hewitt, the Trade and Industry Secretary expressed sympathy for the manufacturers. "The cumulative effect of regulation from Europe is a concern," she said.

Aspartame Lawsuits Accuse Many
Companies of Poisoning the Public

Defendants in the lawsuits include Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Bayer Corp., the Dannon Company, William Wrigley Jr. Company, ConAgra Foods, Wyeth, Inc., The NutraSweet Company, and Altria Corp. (parent company of Kraft Foods and Philip Morris) and WalMart, among others.

SACRAMENTO-- April 6th, Lawsuits were filed in three separate California courts against twelve companies who either produce or use the artificial sweetener aspartame as a sugar substitute in their products. The suits were filed in Shasta, Sonoma and Butte County, California.

The suits allege that the food companies committed fraud and breach of warranty by marketing products to the public such as Det Coke, Diet Pepsi, sugar free gum, Flintstone's vitamins, yogurt and children's aspirin with the full knowledge that aspartame, the sweetener in them, is neurotoxic.

Aspartame is a drug masquerading as an additive. It interacts with other drugs, has a synergistic and additive effect with MSG, and is a chemical hyper-sensitization agent. As far back as 1970, Dr. John Olney founded the field of neuroscience called excitotoxicity when he did studies on aspartic acid, which makes up 40% of aspartame, and found it caused lesions in the brains of mice. He made world news on the aspartame/brain tumor connection in 1996. Dr. Ralph Walton, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, has written of the behavioural and psychiatric problems triggered by aspartame-caused depletion of serotonin.

Aspartame causes headache, memory loss, seizures, vision loss, coma and cancer. It worsens or mimics the symptoms of such diseases and conditions as fibromyalgia, MS, lupus, ADD, diabetes, Alzheimer's, chronic fatigue and depression.

Aspartame liberates free methyl alcohol. The resulting chronic methanol poisoning affects the dopamine system of the brain causing addiction. Methanol, or wood alcohol, constitutes one-third of the aspartame molecule and is classified as a severe metabolic poison and narcotic.

Recent news is full of reports of world-class athletes and other healthy consumers of aspartame suddenly dropping dead. Sudden death can occur from aspartame use because it damages the cardiac conduction system.

Dr. Woodrow Monte in the peer reviewed journal, Aspartame: Methanol and the Public Health, wrote: "When diet sodas and soft drinks, sweetened with aspartame, are used to replace fluid loss during exercise and physical exertion in hot climates, the intake of methanol can exceed 250 mg/day or 32 times the Environmental Protection Agency's recommended limit of consumption for this cumulative poison."

The effects of aspartame are documented by the FDA's own data. In 1995 the agency was forced, under the Freedom of Information Act, to release a list of ninety-two aspartame symptoms reported by thousands of victims. This is only the tip of the iceberg. H. J. Roberts, MD, published the medical text 'Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic' -- 1,000 pages of symptoms and diseases triggered by this neurotoxin including the sordid history of its approval.

Since its discovery in 1965, controversy has raged over the health risks associated with the sugar substitute. From laboratory testing of the chemical on rats, researchers have discovered that the drug induces brain tumors. On 30th September 1980, the Board of Inquiry of the FDA concurred and denied the petition for approval. In 1981, the newly appointed FDA Commissioner, Arthur Hull Hayes, ignored the negative ruling and approved aspartame for dry goods. As recorded in the Congressional Record of 1985, then CEO of Searle Laboratories, Donald Rumsfeld, said that he would call in his markers to get aspartame approved. Rumsfeld was on President Reagan's transition team and a day after taking office appointed Hayes. No FDA Commissioner in the previous sixteen years had allowed aspartame on the market.

In 1983, aspartame was approved for use in carbonated beverages. Today it is found in over 5000 foods, drinks and medicines.

Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, MD, author of 'Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills' (http://www.russellblaylockmd.com) wrote about the relationship between aspartame and macular degeneration, diabetic blindness and glaucoma (all known to result from excitotoxin accumulation in the retina).

All of these neurodegenerative diseases are worsened by aspartame. In addition, we now have evidence that excitotoxins play a major role in exacerbation of MS and other demyelinating disorders, including trigeminal neuralgia. Blaylock says that new studies show excitotoxins trigger significant elevation of free radicals in the lining (endothelial cells) of arteries, which means that aspartame will increase the incidence of heart attacks and strokes (atherosclerosis).

In original studies, aspartame has triggered brain, mammary, uterine, ovarian, testicular, thyroid and pancreatic tumours.

Plaintiffs have asked for an injunction to stop companies from producing, manufacturing, processing, selling or using aspartame. Plaintiffs in all three cases are seeking a jury trial.

Aspartame Profile
Today, the sweeteners sucrose and saccharin remain as controversial as ever, and the debate over whether or not they represent a cancer hazard to the public continues to rage. And yet, people who have turned to another alternative to saccharin and sugar over the past 20 years have become equally dismayed at a parallel fur-fight over aspartame, decked out in the garb of a light blue sachet, which began adorning restaurants and diners the world over under the brand names Nutrasweet, Canderel, Equal, Spoonful and Equal-Measure.

Aspartame was discovered by accident in 1965 by James Schlatter, a chemist working for G D Serle Company, who was testing anti-ulcer compounds for his employers. Aspartame's original approval as a sweetener for public consumption was blocked by neuroscientist Dr John W Olney and consumer attorney James Turner in August 1974 over concerns about both aspartame's safety and G D Serle's research practices. However, aspartame duly received its approval for dry goods in 1981 and its go-ahead as a sweetener for carbonated beverages was granted in 1983, despite growing concerns over its neurological effects. In 1985, G D Serle was purchased by pharmaceutical giant Monsanto, and Serle Pharmaceuticals and The NutraSweet Company were created as separate corporate identities.

According to researcher Alex Constantine in his essay entitled "Sweet Poison", aspartame may account for up to 75% of the adverse food reactions reported to the US FDA, due primarily to its reported ability to affect neurological processes in humans. Dr Olney found that an excess of aspartate and glutamate, two chemicals used by the body as neurotransmitters to transmit information between brain neurons, could kill neurons in the brain by allowing too much calcium to collect in the neuron cells to neutralise acid. This neurological damage led Olney to label aspartate and glutamate 'excitotoxins', in that they, according to Olney, 'excite' or stimulate the neural cells to death.

Symptoms
Side-effects laid at the door of aspartame poisoning include fits, convulsions, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, ALS, memory loss, hormonal problems, hearing loss, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, AIDS dementia, brain lesions and neuro-endocrine disorders. Risks to infants, children and pregnant women from aspartame were also underscored by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, a research body that traditionally follows FDA policy and adopts a softly-softly approach to chemical problems. The Federation declared: "It is prudent to avoid the use of dietary supplements of L-glutamic acid by pregnant women, infants and children. The existence of evidence for potential endocrine responses… would also suggest a neuroendocrine link and that… L-glutamic acid should be avoided by women of childbearing age and individuals with affective disorders."

Commentary
Aspartame comprises two chief trouble-makers:
Phenylalanine: The amino acid L-phenylalanine, used by the brain, comprises 50% of aspartame. People suffering from the genetic disorder phenylketonuria (PKU) cannot metabolise phenylalanine and so an excess of this amino acid builds up in parts of the brain, leading to a decrease of serotonin levels, bringing on emotional disorders and depression.

Methanol: Also known as wood alcohol, the poison methanol is a 10% ingredient of aspartame, which is created when aspartame is heated above 86oF (30oC) in, for example, the preparation of processed foods. Methanol oxidises in the body to produce formic acid and the deadly neurotoxin, formaldehyde, also used as a prime ingredient in many vaccinations. Methanol is considered by America's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as "…a cumulative poison, due to the low rate of excretion once it is absorbed. In the body, methanol is oxidised to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these metabolites are toxic."

A one-litre carbonated beverage, sweetened with aspartame, contains around 56 mg of methanol. Heavy consumers of soft drinks sweetened with aspartame can ingest up to 250 mg of methanol daily, especially in the summer, amounting to 32 times the EPA warning limit.

Dr Woodrow C Monte, Director of the Food Science and Nutritional Laboratory at Arizona State University, was concerned that human response to methanol was probably much higher than with animals, due to humans lacking key enzymes that assist in the detoxification of methanol in other creatures. Monte stated: "There are no human or mammalian studies to evaluate the possible mutagenic, teratogenic, or carcinogenic effects of chronic administration of methyl alcohol."

Monte's concern about aspartame was so great that he petitioned the FDA through the courts to address these issues. Monte requested that the FDA "…slow down on this soft drink issue long enough to answer some of the important questions. It's not fair that you are leaving the full burden of proof on the few of us who are concerned and have such limited resources. You must remember that you are the American public's last defense. Once you allow usage [of aspartame], there is literally nothing I or my colleagues can do to reverse the course. Aspartame will then join saccharin, the sulfiting agents, and God knows how many other questionable compounds enjoined to insult the human constitution with government approval."

Ironically, shortly after Dr Monte's impassioned plea, Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., the Commissioner of the Food & Drug Administration, approved the use of aspartame in carbonated beverages. Shortly after, he left the FDA to take up a position with G D Serle's public relations company. In 1993, the FDA further approved aspartame as a food ingredient in numerous process foods that would always be heated above 86 degrees F as part of their preparation.

Dr Joseph Mercola is no lover of aspartame. The well-known nutrition and health researcher itemises another catalogue of woes that have come to punctuate aspartame's hopeless legacy as a food additive:

"In 1991, the National Institutes of Health listed 167 symptoms and reasons to avoid the use of aspartame, but today it is a multi-million dollar business that contributes to the degeneration of the human population, as well as the deliberate suppression of overall intelligence, short-term memory and the added contribution as a carcinogenic environmental co-factor.

The FDA and Centers for Disease Control continue to receive a stream of complaints from the population about aspartame. It is the only chemical warfare weapon available in mass quantities on the grocery shelf and promoted in the media. It has also been indicated that women with an intolerance for phenylalanine, one of the components of aspartame, may give birth to infants with as much as a 15% drop in intelligence level if they habitually consume products containing this dangerous substance."

Why Death Rates Decrease
When Doctors Go On Strike
by Dr Mercola
With Rachael Droege

A major paper by Australian researchers asks a question that should never have needed to be asked: Will more doctors increase or decrease death rates? But sadly, with the state of health care as it is, this is a very legitimate, even necessary, inquiry.

The report, Will More Doctors Increase or Decrease Death Rates? (PDF), conducted by the Center for Health Program Evaluation in Australia, refers to Australian statistics, but I believe the information is relevant to America and other countries as well. The hypothesis? An increase in the doctor supply is associated with an increase in death rates. Read on to find out several potential reasons why this hypothesis may in fact be true.

Health Care and Adverse Events
One possibility of why medical care may increase death rates is the large number of adverse events associated with it. The report mentions a 1995 study in which close to 17 percent of 14,000 hospital admissions were associated with an adverse event. Of those, 51 percent were considered preventable, in close to 14 percent the disability was permanent and in almost 5 percent the patient died.

Dependency on Medical Care
A second possibility, which the researchers call 'the dependency hypothesis,' is the notion that the more doctors available, the more dependent people are on medical care to maintain their health. They therefore place less importance on lifestyle factors that can have a greater affect on their health.

I believe this is one of the major prevailing thoughts in America and is one of the main reasons why so many people are facing chronic illnesses. It is also one of my primary reasons for establishing this site years ago [www.mercola.com] - to help people realize that they can, and need to, take responsibility for their own health. Doctors are certainly necessary and useful at times, but ultimately the responsibility for your health is your own.

Cognitive Dissonance, or Conflicting Beliefs
Another interesting concept explored in the report is that of cognitive dissonance. Most basically, this is the unsettling state that occurs when a person has conflicting beliefs or opinions.

Cognitive dissonance affects most everyone, but in regard to healthcare many people understand that certain lifestyle choices are better for their health, yet may not want to make the 'right' choices because they are less pleasurable in the present. In order to resolve the conflict of knowing intellectually what the healthy lifestyle choices are while having a desire to live a self-indulgent life, the researchers say people may 'adopt an exaggerated confidence in the efficacy of medical care and its ability to offset the harmful effects of self-neglect.'

Failure to Inform Patients on Health Truths?
You may have noticed the article listed on the home page titled Doctors Are the Number Three Cause of Death in the U.S. This Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) article really reveals the state of the health care system in the United States and if you haven't read it already I encourage you to do so.

Interestingly, Dr. Starfield, who published the original study mentioned above, said she disagreed with the headline I had come up with. She did not feel that doctors were the third leading cause of death, but thought they were the number one cause of death because of their failure to inform patients about the truth of health. I believe this might be a bit too harsh as even if people understand the health truths they still have freedom of choice and can choose to use sugar, soda and drugs (legal and illegal) to compromise their health and longevity.

Nevertheless, the Australian researchers concluded that their hypothesis that an increase in the doctor supply is associated with an increase in death rates needs to be seriously contemplated.

Doctors Fear EU Medical Powers
By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

The British Medical Association is to demand urgent clarification over a last-minute change to the Draft European Constitution, fearing that it could give Brussels sweeping powers to fight almost any form of disease.

Dr Edwin Borman, the chairman of the BMA's international committee, said that fresh clauses slipped into the health chapter (Article 111-179) appear to give the European Union the lead lawmaking role in medical care.

The BMA backs a strong role for the EU in tackling infectious epidemics that cross borders, but the new text goes much further by covering "serious threats to health when they affect more than one member state".

"We will request clarification as to what constitutes serious threats to health," said Dr Borman. "EU competence should be limited to external and unprecedented threats like Sars and bio-terrorism rather than existing diseases. Conditions like cancer and diabetes should not fall into this clause."

Brussels already plays a powerful role in the health sector through the effect of the EU single market, which has led to a series of European Court rulings touching on hospital management and the treatment of patients.

But the new text would appear to give the European Court much wider licence to impose policy changes on the NHS.

Earlier versions of the draft constitution restricted the EU's legislative role in health care to "common safety concerns".

Ireland's EU presidency changed the wording at the request of the Irish health minister, Michael Martin, an ardent foe of smoking. The health chapter is now deemed "closed".

Germany, Austria, Greece, Spain and the Scandinavian states have all been irked by the late changes.

Sweden and Finland fear that it could be used to devalue their elite health systems, widely regarded as among the best in the world. But neither wants to help the eurosceptic cause in the run up to the European elections by drawing public attention to the problem.

The food, drink, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries are lobbying strongly against the amendments. They fear that the clauses could be used to enforce EU-wide drinking and smoking laws or dictate usage of medicines.

Industry lawyers in Britain say the Government appears to have overlooked a crucial legal point in the new text, failing to spot the special status of a key sub-clause (paragraph 4 of Article 111-179).

While most of the draft article is merely an incantation of worthy aims, clause 4 gives Brussels primacy over Westminster to pass new health care laws.

The Foreign Office insists that a safeguard clause ensures that Britain will retain control over the NHS.

Damsin Rose, the head of the European public Health Alliance, said that the new constitution would in reality change little since Britain and other member states had already lost essential control over their health services. "We already have a de facto EU health policy," she said.

Drug Firm Threatened Us, Say MMR Families
by James Meikle, health correspondent

Families who claim the MMR vaccine has caused illnesses in their children have accused one of the three drug companies involved in the case of trying to intimidate them into dropping legal action.

Lawyers for Merck & Co wanted to know whether the families were going to pursue their cases now that public funding, already worth £15m, was likely to be withdrawn. They said the costs of the action had been 'considerable' and children and their parents would be "at risk of facing a liability for any further costs Merck continues to incur in defending the claim."

About 500 families are thought to have received letters from the company's lawyers, Lovells, saying Merck would not seek any order for costs as long as they 'give an undertaking to us... not to issue any further proceedings arising out of vaccination with MMR vaccine against Merck in this or any other jurisdiction'.

Jackie Fletcher, of the campaign group Jabs, said she knew of two families who had already given such under-takings. "It is very threatening and intimidating. It has already put the fear of God into parents. They are just going to hear alarm bells and think, 'the cost, the money, my house."

Lovells said it had informed the families' solicitors about what they were doing. "We were not endeavouring to pressure people to act one way or another," said a spokeswoman.

The company had simply been stating 'the potential cost liability if they cease to be legally aided'.

The Fluoride Action Network Fan Campaign

Bulletin # 38: Connett's testimony in Ireland.

May 17, 2004

Dear All,

I have just returned from Ireland where I gave invited testimony to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children (of the Irish Parliament) which has been investigating the fluoridation issue. Ireland has been fluoridated since 1963. It is the only country in Europe with a mandatory fluoridation policy. At present approximately 73% of the Irish people are drinking water treated with industrial grade hexafluorosilicic acid imported from Spain.

I gave testimony on Thursday May 13. My testimony was delayed by about 90 minutes as the committee heard from the Department of Health and other government officials on Ireland's support for a new proposal at EU level to allow the sale of genetically modified sweetcorn. This proposal generated considerable consternation among several members of the committee as this is a very hot issue among Irish (and other European) citizens. At this stage there were
approximately 14 or 15 members present. When I eventually gave testimony, the numbers dropped off to about 7 or 8.

I was asked to limit my opening comments to about 10 minutes. These are printed below and as you will see in addition to a printed version of these comments I provided each of the members present with two documents: 1) a copy of the '50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoridation'
which was an updated version of the document I presented to the Fluoridation Forum in October 2000. This can be viewed at http://www.fluoridealert.org/50reasons.htm (click on the printer friendly button to get a pdf file with a short historical introduction) and 2) a critique of the Fluoridation Forum report prepared by eleven scientists including myself (see http://www.fluoridealert.org/irish.forum-critique.htm ).

After my opening presentation I was questioned by a total of 5 people. These included Deputy Olivia Mitchell (health spokesperson for the Fine Gael party); Deputy John Gormley (health spokesperson for the Green Party); Senator Frank Feighan (Fine Gael party); an independent deputy and a senator from the ruling Fianna Fail party. None of the questions were hostile and allowed me plenty of room to elaborate on the concerns presented in the '50 Reasons' and my
disgust with the way the Fluoridation Forum had failed to address these in writing even though they had promised to do so. It has now been three and half years and not a single response has been offered. I pointed out that had the tables been turned I would have had a written answer to '50 Reasons to Promote Fluoridation' in three and half days! I also offered to
return to Ireland at my own expense to participate in a public debate with any promoter of fluoridation if anyone could be found who would agree to do this.

It was interesting that one of the health committee members (Deputy Dermot Fitzpatrick, Fianna Fail party) who was present and known to be pro-fluoridation (he is a dentist) did not pose any questions to me. After the meeting was over he told me that he remained sceptical
of the anti-fluoridation arguments. I gently suggested that he should try to find someone in Ireland who could defend the pro-fluoridation in open public debate.

One of the most exciting parts of the meeting came when a Senator from the ruling party (Fianna Fail) announced that he had once been pro-fluoridation (when he was chair of the Western Ireland Health Board) but had now changed his mind and would campaign against
fluoridation in the future. This seemed to take everyone by surprise.

In the public gallery there were several campaigners against fluoridation present including Dr. Don McAuley who heads the group Irish Dentists Opposed to Fluoridation (IDOF), which now has 47 dentists on board; Dr. Andrew Rhynne who writes a weekly column in the Irish Medical News (his latest piece lampooning Health Minister Michael Martin's pro-fluoridation policy is incredibly funny); Robert Pocock, who is the fluoridation campaigner for the group VOICE for the Irish Environment and Gladys Ryan. Gladys Ryan is the woman who took the Irish government to court in 1963 in an effort to stop the mandatory fluoridation bill going forward. This case went all the way to the supreme court where Gladys lost the ruling. Gladys is now 82. She certainly enjoyed last week's proceedings and we all hope that she will be around when this archaic practice is abandonned in Ireland.

Even though there were reporters present from the Irish times and the Irish Examiner, their coverage went largely to the genetically modified food discussion and not on my presentation. The Irish Times ignored it completely. The Irish Examiner (May 14) added this comment to the end of their coverge of the GM discussion,

The committee was also told by anti-fluoride campaigner, Prof Paul Connett, Professor of Chemistry at St Lawrence University in New York, that key information he gave to a government expert group which looked at the safety of fluoride in water was ignored.'

However, a videotape of the proceedings will be available to the public.

Prior to the hearing, I had a meeting with Enda Kenny, the leader of the Fine Gael party (the major opposition party) who reiterated his personal opposition to water fluoridation.

Mr Chairman and Committee Members, thank you for this invitation to address you on the issue of water fluoridation and the report of the Fluoridation Forum.

You should have received three documents from me:

1) A recently updated and published version of the '50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoridation.'

2) A copy of the scientific critique of the Fluoridation Forum Report, prepared by myself and 10 other scientists and circulated by the group VOICE.

3) A printed copy of these opening remarks.

As I believe you know I was invited to present my scientific concerns to the Fluoridation Forum in October 2000. As there was considerable concern from Irish citizens on the objectivity of the panel I decided I would challenge the members to answer the '50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoridation.' The panel agreed that they would answer these questions and set up a sub-committee to do so. However, after 18 months they announced that they didn't have time to complete this task, but stated that reasons would be addressed in the body of their report. They were not.

When the report finally appeared it presented a totally inadequate analysis of the health concerns as they have been reported in the literature. Out of 296 pages in their report they only devoted 17 pages to health effects other than dental fluorosis (pp 108-124). 16 of these pages simply summarized other reviews. For the single issue (increased hip fractures in the elderly) for which they examined the original literature they spent less than one page summarizing only three papers (pp122,123).

In addition to their failure to answer the '50 Reasons' as promised, I was particularly disappointed to discover that they didn't review two of the key studies for which I presented information in October 2000. These were the papers on the accumulation of fluoride in the human pineal gland by Jennifer Luke and a study by Li et al. who examined hip fracture rates in China. Both of these studies had been published by the time the Fluoridation Forum was published.

I am bewildered that the Ministry of Health and Children would go to the expense of flying me over from the US to give testimony to this panel, only to have them ignore the key information I presented.

I think it is regrettable that they ignored both of these studies. Jennifer Luke's study on fluoride and the pineal gland is particularly important. She found that fluoride accumulates in the human pineal gland to very high levels and also found in animal studies that fluoride lowered the production of the important hormone melatonin as well as shortening the time that it took for these animals as to reach puberty.

It is also regrettable that they ignored the study by Li et al. (2001) because it contradicts their conclusion that 'long term exposure to fluoride does not have an adverse effect on bone strength, bone mineral density or fracture incidence'. In fact, Li et al. found a dose related
increase in hip fracture in the elderly in six Chinese villages. In this study the hip fracture rates in the village at 1.5 ppm was double the rate of the village at 1ppm, and the village above 4.3 ppm had triple rate of hip fracture. For such a serious outcome this result indicates a very small margin of safety, especially when considering that once fluoride is deliberately added to the water one cannot control the dose people receive from the water and from other sources.

In these short opening remarks I cannot possibly address all '50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoridation.' However, I will be happy to elaborate on any that interest committee members, as well as any of the arguments we have made in our scientific critique of the Fluoridation Forum report.

Here I would like to stress 6 concerns:

1) Fluoride is present in mothers' milk at very low levels, i.e. 0.005 - 0.01 ppm. This means that fluoride is unlikely to be an essential nutrient. It also means that women who bottle feed their babies in Ireland will be giving them up to 200 times the level that nature intended to be in their first meals (See reasons 1,11).

2) Point 1) becomes of critical concern when we note the numerous studies which indicate fluoride can damage animal brain and the recent studies from China (Xiang et al, 2003 a. and b.) which indicate a lowering of IQ associated with fluoride levels of 1.8 ppm. This again suggests a ridiculously low margin of safety for another serious outcome (See Reasons
19, 20).

3) Also of concern with respect to children's IQ are the studies by Masters and Coplan (1999, 2000) who have found an association between the fluoridating agent used in Ireland and the uptake of environmental lead into children's blood (See Reasons 42, 43, 44).

4) Still on the brain is the Varner et al.(1998) study which found that rats dosed with fluoride at 1 ppm in their drinking water for 1 year resulted in a greater uptake of aluminium into their brains and the formation of beta amyloid deposits which are characteristic lesions observed in Alzheimer's patients (See Reasons 17, 18).

5) There are about 800 studies in the biochemical literature which indicate that fluoride in the presence of aluminium switches on G-proteins which are involved in the transmission of hormonal and other messages across cellular membranes. Thus fluoride has the potential to scramble important regulatory signals in the brain and other tissues. Points 4) and 5) are particularly alarming when one notes the recent reports that several counties in Ireland frequently exceed the safe levels of aluminium in their water, sometimes by margins as high as 500%. Exceeding the aluminium levels is bad enough, but when they are exceeded in the presence of fluoride ions it could be considerably worse (See Reason 14).

6) There are many other health concerns, but I will end my opening remarks by noting that fluoride's proven benefits to teeth are very slight ( in the largest government sponsored survey a difference of only 0.6 tooth surfaces out of 128 tooth surfaces in a child's mouth was found, and this difference was not shown to be statistically significant, Brunelle and Carlos, 1990)
and as recently as 1999, the CDC conceded that these benefits are TOPICAL not SYSTEMIC (See Reasons 2-7).

Conclusion: For such slight benefits how could any rational person advocate a practice which poses such risks? And confronted with such a problematic risk versus benefit equation how could any government force such a practice on individuals without their informed consent. This takes governmental arrogance to a whole new level. For those who do not wish to be exposed to fluoride this practice denies them a crucial human right. For those who do wish to receive fluoride, halting fluoridation will deprive them of nothing, since fluoride is universally and readily available in fluoridated toothpaste.

I hope I have presented enough in this opening statement and supporting documents to encourage this subcommittee to call for an immediate halt to this outdated, discredited and non-defendable practice.

Thank you.

Five Important Tips if You've Had
Gallstones or Your Gallbladder Removed
by Dr. Joseph Mercola
with Rachael Droege

The New York Times regional newspaper interviewed me recently about gallbladders and I thought it would be useful to review this common problem. I have seen many hundreds of patients who have had their gallbladders removed and I don't recall anyone ever telling me that their surgeon advised them to do something to compensate for removing this important organ.

Just about every one of them was told they didn't need their gallbladder and that it was perfectly fine to have it removed. This is reprehensible ignorance as it condemns the patient to a lifelong deficiency of essential fatty acids.

Why? Because after your liver produces bile, which emulsifies fats for improved fat digestion, half of it goes to the small intestine, and the other half is stored in the gallbladder until it's needed.

About 500,000 gallbladders are removed each year in the United States, typically due to gallstones, which affect about 15 percent of Americans. Gallstones form when bile is in the gallbladder too long and it collects and settles. Although most gallstones dissolve naturally and produce no symptoms, if one ignores warning symptoms and does not address the reasons why their gallbladder is not functioning properly, then the disease can progress to the point where the pancreas is inflamed or the gallbladder is seriously infected and may have to be removed to save a person's life.

Signs of Gallbladder Disease
If you have any of the following symptoms then your gallbladder may not be functioning properly:

· Pain when pressing on the gallbladder, which is directly under the last rib on the right on the same plane as one's nipple. This is usually due to gallbladder "sludge" (thick bile).
· Stone on a gallbladder ultrasound.
· Greasy stools that are loose and tend to float to the top of the toilet bowl. This indicates improper fat absorption.

Treatment Methods
As I said in my interview, regular exercise is one of the best things you can do to address gallbladder dysfunction. This is a great proactive prevention step but most people don't worry about their gallbladder until they have a problem. Unfortunately, by that time exercise alone is not going to cut it.

At that time a gallbladder flush may provide some relief and once the symptoms abate an aggressive cardiovascular exercise program can serve to permanently improve the gallbladder.

It is also imperative that you clean up your diet. One has to stop eating sugars, reduce or eliminate the grains and eliminate all fluids but water. You can consult my nutrition plan to make sure you're eating enough healthy foods.

Further, the gallbladder is frequently infected when it is diseased so large amounts of high-quality probiotics will also be helpful in correcting the problem.

What to do if You've had Your Gallbladder Removed
High-quality fats - especially omega-3 fats - are essential for good health and if you don't have a gallbladder you will have an impaired ability to absorb them. Trying to digest fat without bile is like trying to wash greasy dishes without soap--it doesn't work very well. If your gallbladder is removed then you need to compensate by providing an increased level of fat digestive enzymes (lipase) to compensate for this. Unless you receive a gallbladder transplant, which is unlikely, then you'll need to continue taking the enzymes for the rest of your life to ensure that fats can be absorbed and used by the body for their many important functions.

Peer Leads Inquiry on Gulf War Syndrome

An independent inquiry into Gulf War Syndrome under a former law lord will be announced today by the parliamentary advisor for the Royal British Legion.

Lord Morris of Manchester said he had asked Lord Lloyd of Berwick, who is Attorney-General to the Prince of Wales, to set up the inquiry after the Government persistently resisted any such hearing.

The Royal British Legion had been calling for an inquiry since 1997, he said. But the Government insisted it would not help the many thousands of Gulf War veterans suffering from a range of conditions collectively described as the syndrome.

"There are 2,585 veterans - many now terminally ill - already in receipt of war pensions, and over 5,000 reporting a wide range of undiagnosed illnesses," Lord Morris said yesterday. "There is clearly a major problem to be addressed."

Lord Lloyd said: "My intention is to open the inquiry as soon as possible, and to hold hearings in public."

Safety Of Vitamins
by Andrew Saul, PhD

The number-one side-effect of vitamins is failure to take enough of them. Vitamins are extraordinarily safe substances.

As a contributing editor to a medical journal (the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine http://www.orthomed.org), I have learned that it is easier for most researchers to get a negative vitamin study published than a positive one. As with the evening news, where the policy is usually 'If it bleeds, it leads,' the scare story sells. Same with vitamin articles: the shock-story gets the front page.

There is some strong economic inertia at work. Successful vitamin therapy is a triple threat to the medical cartel. It threatens physicians because they know practically nothing about it, and it is represents real competition. It threatens the pharmaceutical industry because vitamins cannot be patented to be sold at huge profits. It threatens dieticians because the fallaciousness of their food-groups-always, supplements-never dogma will be exposed. In all three cases, it is the very success of vitamin therapy that is cause for such alarm.

The only sure way to quash the popularization of vitamin therapy is to try to discredit it by claiming it to be dangerous. This is the world's oldest way to stop progress: just declare it fraud. Condemnation without investigation. And, if you can, attack the person, not the idea. If you dislike the singer, you'll never hear the song. A really bright dictator doesn't have to burn books; just getting people to not want to bother to read them is sufficient.

So right up front, these important reminders:

There are over 106,000 deaths from pharmaceutical drugs each year in the USA, even when prescribed correctly and taken as prescribed. (Lucian Leape, Error in medicine. Journal of the American Medical Association, 1994, 272:23, p 1851. Also: Leape LL. Institute of Medicine medical error figures are not exaggerated. JAMA. 2000 Jul 5;284(1):95-7.)

In addition, there are an estimated 150,000 more people killed by other aspects of medical care, including botched and unnecessary surgeries (12,000); hospital-caused infections (80,000); medication errors (7,000); and other medical mistakes (20,000). That makes a total of a staggering quarter of a million deaths caused by the medical profession. Per year. Just in the USA. This makes medical care one of the chief causes of death in the country. (Starfield, B. JAMA. 2000 (July 26): 284, 4)

There is not even one death per year from vitamin supplements. (American Association of Poison Control Centers' Toxic Exposure Surveillance System)

Therefore, as Abram Hoffer, M.D., says: "Attacks on the safely of vitamins are really an attack on the efficacy of vitamins."

School - Programmed Retardation
(Learning Disorder, Discipline Problems and Dyslexia)

"This is no longer an educational system. Its character has been completely transformed and it now clearly reveals itself to be what for many decades it has been in the process of becoming: namely, an agency working for the barbarisation of youth."
George Reisman, professor of economics
Pepperdine University, Malibu, CA
'The Intellectual Activist'

Many children experience problems at school. From drugs, bullying and truancy through to challenges in learning and retaining new information. Some fall behind their classmates in reading and maths and cannot adjust to the learning environment. Others have problems with naughtiness or merely fitting in and socialising with other children.

We have examined physical problems that invariably lead to a sick and unhappy child. Food allergies and blood sugar imbalances, as well as toxins in the diet and environment, impair cognitive ability. The lack of consistent and effective nutrition is also one of the chief causes of childhood developmental and behavioural problems.

But many parents remain unaware of the tremendous toll psychiatric influences have wrought on the way our children are taught and raised at school. The baleful influences of Dewey, Russell and Thorndike, radiating out of the all-powerful Teacher's College at Columbia University, have indeed infected our societies with a rot that is proving very challenging to extirpate.

PERSONAL INITIATIVE
Prior to the 1920's, direct emphasis was placed on achieving academic brilliance. At the heart of this were the three 'R's - reading, 'riting and 'rithmatic. But children went to school to learn, not only academic subjects, but also the social skills they would need to survive and prosper in the adult world that beckoned within a few short years. They learned courage on the sports fields, and politeness and respect for their elders in the classrooms. They learned about law and the mistakes man had made in history and economics. The child was thus fashioned, becoming learned in the knowledge that if he did not learn the lessons of history, he would be doomed to repeat them.

Perhaps more importantly, children under the old system discovered, or were taught how to hone 'personal initiative'. They learned the skills they needed to solve problems, rely on themselves, lead others, triumph against superior odds. They were taught how to conceive an idea, plan its operational phase and then carry it through to a successful conclusion. Children were given projects to do which would last the whole summer. Their work was critically examined when turned in. Lots of red ink was used. Schools taught that failure was not an option. Excellence was the goal. Lack of discipline or bad behaviour were not tolerated. Oikishness and yobbery were given short shrift. Bullying met with a swift and summary justice. British broadcaster Jeremy Paxman, in his very readable polemic, The English, gives us a feel for how it was at one of these leading schools 'back then':

"Once away from home, a good thrashing was accepted as an essential part of the process of turning out a gentleman. The champion flogger was the Reverend Dr John Keate, appointed headmaster of Eton in 1809, who beat an average of ten boys each day (excluding his day of rest on Sundays). On 30th June 1832 came his greatest achievement, the thrashing of over eighty of his pupils. At the end of this marathon, the boys stood and cheered him. It says something about the spirit of these places that he was later able to tell some of the school's old boys of his regret that he hadn't flogged them more often."

Neither was it profitable for a boy to whinge to his parents about the disciplinarian, spartan regime of his school. After all, that was what his parents were paying for. This was the price, Paxman reminds us, of turning him into one of the Breed.

THE WHOLE ENCHILADA
I was schooled at Charterhouse in the UK between 1973 and 1977 along with my elder brother, James. My younger brother, Ian, was sent to Sutton Valence, a private school in Kent. Charterhouse's avowed aim was to take a snivelling thirteen-year-old (me) and machine him into an adult. For this to work, I had to have a complete understanding of the outside world and how its complicated parts interrelated one with another. I had to be able to express ideas, argue my principles, learn to discharge stress, keep myself fed and maintain a high degree of physical fitness. I had to exhibit unflinching courage in the face of adversity. I had to learn how to suffer with stoic determination that my failures would not be repeated.

The breadth of the curriculum was awesome. My subjects included English, English Literature, Physics, Biochemistry, Biology, Economics, Latin, German, German Literature, French, French Literature, Mathematics, Advanced Mathematics, Geography, History and Ancient History. These were merely the preliminary subjects I had to take for 'O' Level grades. A 'D' in any exam was a disgrace and would rightly have earned a thrashing in Keate's day. 'C's would have had the Housemaster's lip curling in a withering contempt. 'B's were second best and simply unacceptable. The 'A' was the only game in town. The teachers in the main had colossal brains. You failed them at your peril.

I flogged myself to exhaustion and distinction, earning 11 'A's and 2 'B's. I later earned 'A' levels before leaving the majestic old institution. During my studies, I represented the school in cricket, rugby and soccer. I became an accomplished sportsman. I learned how to speak in public and argue with the best of my teachers in the scheduled library debates. I learned how to be proud of, and love my country. I was taught how to blast the ace out of a playing card at thirty paces with a rifle, earning my marksman's certificate in the process.

The point is, I had worked hard for my accomplishments and they were my own. I had not been humoured, patronised or over-praised. It had not been easy. It was sink or swim and you learned the pecking order and your place in it. I once had A Concise History of 18th Century Europe slammed over my head by my Housemaster for failing to pay attention to what he was saying about the Industrial Revolution. There was nothing concise about that book. The headache stayed with me for days. No thoughts of litigation ever entered my throbbing brain. Yet, sore head or not, my achievements at school had bred an indefatigable confidence, discipline, respect and a self-reliance that has stayed with me to this day. My mission at school was thus accomplished. I was now an independently functioning, educated adult that knew the difference between right and wrong. I could now go out and serve others.

Britain built the most formidable empire the world has ever seen on the bedrock laid down by this no-nonsense system of education. The stoicism and courage infused by its methods have been evident in its laws, its literature, its art and in a thousand desperate actions, from Rourke's Drift to El Alamein, from the Spitfire skies of Kent to the churned-up poppy fields of Flanders. Even those who hated Britain took the best parts she had to offer and made them their own. Still today, many see it as their emigration destination of choice. Yes, there were flaws and abuses and victims and heartaches in the British system, but nothing foreign there to the plight of the human condition. For decades, the sun had never set on the British Empire. But the final twilight eventually came when the candle of her national and creative initiative was dampened and then extinguished at the wellspring of her educational font. To destroy a dream empire, you must first destroy her children's ability to imagine it, to want it. To inherit it.

LIGHTING THE FUSE
It was psychiatry which provided the canker that rotted the school system, not just in Britain, but overseas as well. America was particularly hardest hit. Ralph Truitt, head of the National Committee for Mental Hygiene, declared in 1927: "If we are going to prevent dependency, delinquency, insanity, and general inadequacy, the school should be the focus of our attack."

Psychiatrists, mental hygienists and reformers believed stress was the main cause of a child's mental woes. They targeted the three main areas they saw as the instigators of this stress: school failure, a curriculum centred on academics, and disciplinary procedures. Eliminate the emphasis on achievement and academics, and you would rid the child of the stress of school failure.

But, in targeting academics, the Teacher's College doyens were destroying personal initiative and, as crucially, the context in which a child finds himself in the world. For instance, in avoiding proper history, the child is not taught that his acts affect not just himself, but others too, and sometimes long after the doer of the deed has gone. Bruce Wiseman gives us other examples:

"With no awareness of, say, the Great Fire of London in 1666, and other such disasters, the building contractor of today thinks modern fire codes are 'stupid'. So he cuts corners to avoid what he thinks are pointless regulations. Catastrophe results. Shoddy workmanship. Racial hatred. Economic chaos. All can and do result from a society that has no understanding of all that has gone before…. And so we spend our own last breaths - and our children's - to learn the same lessons again.

Science is another academic subject. It covers the field of electronics, biology, medicine, chemistry, physics and a host of others. Without an elementary grounding in the sciences, we are creating people who are becoming more and more dependent on technological advances, while becoming less and less aware of the basic information upon which these advances are based. We end up with a population that does not understand the mechanics of disease, building structures, electricity, bodily functions, nutrition, plant growth - the list is endless. Yet these are things that touch all our lives and our knowledge or ignorance of them can mean the difference, literally, between life and death. "

Here we see the Protocols coming into their own; a dullard, ill-educated people spending 12 years in an educational system being taught a fraction of what their forebears learned. They are not even, as we shall discover, taught to read properly. Gradually the technological knowledge of society aggregates into the hands of the few, which is of course the whole point of social control. The people may not like the controllers. They may smash up a few city blocks in the annual May Day, anti-New-World-Order riots to express their frustration at 'being controlled' by the 'multi-nationals'. But in the end, 'bread and circuses' always win out for the dullards. These days, no-one grows their own food anymore. We have to rely on Ford and Toyota for our cars, on Monsanto, WalMart and Safeways for our food, on Ted Turner and Rupert Murdoch for our news and entertainment, and on our medical peers to heal us when we're sick. The newspapers may patronisingly express our concerns in the most indignant and satisfying vitriol. But things stay just the same. And the whole game of control moves to Sega Level 4.

THE ARTS
And when mankind's most valuable emotional expressions - the arts - become a laughable parody of their former brilliance, what indeed becomes of us? Art gives us visual and auditory perceptions of the very heights to which mankind may aspire. A society weaned on comic books, MTV, Andy Warhol, gangsta rap and Jerry Springer loses the wonderful breadth of language and expression of art in every available field to evaluate and give meaning to the kaleidoscopic strata of achievements, places, technologies, customs, ideas and all that is godly, human, of this earth and beyond. If knowledge promotes understanding and tolerance, what does ignorance promote? Maybe the kind of behaviour we increasingly see on our streets and in our schools?

WHERE HAS ALL THE TALENT GONE?
All of which leads up to the question of educational standards. During the course of my research into this subject, I have spoken to a great number of teachers over the years. I would estimate that a full 80% of them themselves have learning disabilities or lack of social control skills based on how they were taught. Today in Britain, we suffer from a shortage of old-school teachers - even those from abroad are now balking at entering the pig-pen that is 21st century schoolyard Britain and America. Talent has been migrating out of the school systems across the world for years. What little remains finds itself bewildered, under siege, underpaid - which of course, once again, is the whole idea. Little wonder that homeschooling has become so popular in America - a system that has developed off the back of the frustration and anger many parents feel towards the declining standards and corruption of moral ideals in the classroom. Parents have decided to act. And they have used their personal initiative.

DYSLEXIA AND READING PROBLEMS
Eight percent of America's children are said to suffer from a reading and spelling disorder, known as dyslexia, an alleged defect in the language centre of the brain which prevents literacy. Other nations are reporting similar figures. What is not being reported however is how dyslexia has only struck in the past seventy years when, prior to this, illiteracy was solidly on the wane. In 1930, the illiteracy rates in America were as follows:

· 1.5% among native-born whites
· 9.9 % among foreign-born blacks
· 9.2% among urban blacks
· 16.3% among blacks in general

The only reason many were illiterate was that they simply had not gone to school. Today, the illiteracy rate among blacks in the US is around 40%. For whites, the figure varies from 7-30%, the exact figure being unknown. In 1990, 700,000 US high school graduates could not even read their own diplomas. Of the 190 million Americans (of all races) over 16 with an average school attendance of 12.4 years, almost 25% cannot read grade school lessons. Around 28 of 29 students would not be able to earn college credits in any other nation but America. This is a nation that has spent billions supposedly to ensure reading success among its 'socially disadvantaged populations' via its Special Educations programs.

PHONICS
Destroy a child's ability to read and write, and you effectively mutilate the chain of educational links that lead to the development of that child's intellect. The tried and tested method for teaching a child to read is the phonics system. This involves giving children the tools they need to decode the mysteries of the written word by breaking down words phonetically. This system is actually an extension of the 'baby talk' parents use instinctively to communicate with their little ones. Leading American educator Beverly K Eakman, quoting from an Associated Press article, explains the connection:

"Every infant needs to master the phonetic elements of speech…. parents' baby talk universally exaggerates the vowel sounds in a high-pitched, drawn-out, sing-song manner that allows babies to absorb key building blocks of language - especially the 'ee', 'ah' and 'oo' sounds. Tiny infants younger than six months of age, say researchers, are learning their very first words and 'learn to categorise vowel sounds that are meaningful in their native languages while ignoring the subtle variations'. Apparently… 'biology has structured us [parents] to know what to do. When the biology of people produces this effect across three cultures [America, Sweden and Russia]… that tells you something.

What it tells us is that the sounds of language are important, and that in an alphabetic structure, it is a crime not to teach children how to relate these sounds to certain letters and letter combinations, thereby enabling them to break the 'code' of written language. But by high school today, spelling instruction generally means placing a bunch of unrelated words on the chalkboard and telling children to learn them for a test next week. No approach is given concerning how to proceed in a logical way to spell them. In other words, there is no transfer value from one list of words to the next."

THE 'WHOLE-WORD' METHOD
Psychiatry's contribution to illiteracy has been the introduction of the 'whole-word' system of reading tuition. Otherwise known as 'Look-Say' or 'Sight-Word', this program was introduced by Wundt graduate and psychologist James Cattell, a Teacher's College faculty member. Here, the child is taught, not phonetics, but to memorise each individual word as a picture. When the system was first introduced, many teachers were uncomfortable deserting what had traditionally worked, and so mixed whole-word with phonetics to produce a combined reading program. In whole-word, the context has been removed, namely, that rules applied to one word can no longer be transferred to interpreting another, thus preventing the child from building an aggregate system of reading expertise. In his 1955 landmark book, Why Johnny Can't Read, Rudolph Flesch remarks that teacher's colleges throughout the world soon began receiving textbooks on how to teach reading using whole-word. The results were predictably disastrous. San Diego Unified School District in Southern California, for example, experienced a 50% dive in the median reading skills of its students in just one year (1990-1991) after adopting the catastrophic method.

Today we have a veritable epidemic of dyslexia and illiteracy. Another industry has grown up around these 'special needs' kids to help them with their 'psychological' problems. "Their eyes move in funny patterns," some counsellors remark (Could this be evidence of a brain disorder?) In actual fact, the poor mite can't learn a huge vocabulary since his brain has to learn all the different pictures that constitute the words of his language. The result is bad spelling, despair, and perhaps most damaging, a stigmatising psychological label that the child is somehow 'mentally impaired' - a label the child will carry with him for the rest of his life.

Today, red marks on exam papers are regarded as 'demeaning' and possibly to blame for some of the 'mental disorders' from which today's children apparently suffer. The child is thus not consistently corrected either on their writing or speech. When the child comes into contact with words he hasn't memorised, particularly ones that are near look-alikes, he begins to exhibit what teachers believe is a typical learning disability. Educator Eakman:

"Take for example two random sentences taken from a typical textbook:

  • "Thomas Jefferson was the first president to be inaugurated in Washington."
  • "As the Spirit of St Louis touched down on the turf, the crowds surged toward it."

Using the currently voguish 'whole language'… approach, based on sight memory and context clues alone, a student by seventh grade [13 years old] typically will read these lines as follows:
"Thomas Jefferson was the first president to be assassinated in Washington."
"As the Spirit of St Louis rolled along the surf, the cowards surged towards it."

Naturally this student will do poorly on academic tests. Because of the nature of his errors, the rest of the selections will make no sense to him. The student wonders why Thomas Jefferson was assassinated. The rest of the paragraph seems to indicate the man lived on a good while. Did the Spirit of St Louis have water-landing gear? Why did cowards go up to it instead of away from it? Passed on from grade to grade, this student will eventually throw up his hands in exasperation because nothing in any of his classes makes any sense. What kind of self-esteem do you think he will have?"

Illiteracy, according to a number of studies, has been found to be a decisive factor in former prisoners returning to a life of crime. After all, if you cannot read properly, or have low academic standards and poor scholastic achievements, the employment options are not tremendously welcoming. Michael Brunner, a Research Fellow from the US National Institute of Justice, and author of Retarding America: The Imprisonment of Potential, reports that an overwhelming number of prisoners are not 'learning impaired' but actually quite intelligent. Once taught how to read properly using the phonics method, their self-confidence and esteem rise significantly and they find renewed determination to turn their lives around once they are released. Brunner calls the teaching of reading by the whole-word method 'programmed retardation'.

A 1989 US News & World Report article noted that American schools are actually encouraged to brand children as learning disordered (LD) so they can qualify for the supplementary federal funds earmarked for the handicapped.

THE MATHEMATICS SCANDAL
Mathematics is another example of a discipline that relies on a progressive mastery of skills. So if a student drops the ball early on by not grasping some of the fundamental rules and principles, their progress will quickly falter and halt. Today, many kids are allowed to use calculators in class without grasping the basic skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, which underpin further progress. Maths embodies personal initiative and problem-solving, which is the bugaboo of the Teacher's College ethic of dumbing down. The context is once again removed, so a student who struggles with algebra, for instance, fails at the first hurdle if they are not taught the context of why they must learn the discipline. They cannot conceptualise what they are doing, but rather perform the tasks by rote. If they do not understand a particular step, large classes often prevent the teacher from giving an individual helping hand. The student does not want to appear stupid by asking for help in front of his classmates. In Retarding America, Brunner hits the nail on the head:

"What brings about the delinquency is not academic failure per se, but a sustained frustration which results from continued failure to achieve selected academic goals. When frustration can find no resolution into constructive or productive activity, one response… is aggressive, anti-social behaviour. Other responses are regression, resignation. These have been well documented from clinical research conducted with both animals and humans….

The anti-social aggression that Pavlov was able to create in the laboratory is being created in tens of thousands of classrooms across America…. All the ingredients necessary to create… anti-social aggression through sustained frustration are present: There is an unachievable goal… because the means of achieving it… are absent. The student nevertheless is continually pressured to achieve it by teachers, parents and peers…. Finally the student not only has no alternative for achieving the goal, but… is not allowed to leave the failure-producing environment as a result of compulsory attendance laws. For those who do learn to read [mainly those with good visual memories], they cannot grasp the magnitude of resentment and hostility that is generated in non-readers over time, due to unrelenting frustration from which there is no escape. For many, this frustration explodes into delinquency or… violent forms of social aggression."

As further generations of illiterates or academic failures are produced, these parents themselves understand the frustrations their children are undergoing. They too see no purpose behind academic striving because it didn't work for them either. Those students who do excel are often vilified by the majority of under-achievers, so it becomes a mark of the damned to do well in class. 'Teacher's pet', 'You little pus' and other denigrating epithets can actually cause a bright pupil to down-regulate themselves in order to avoid catching flak in the playground during break. Thus, conforming to your under-achieving peers becomes a necessity of survival and popularity. And all of us want to survive and be popular.

HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, ETC.
Other subjects are also blighted. As politically correct history books began to flood American schools, major human events became marginalised in the footnotes, while the liberation movements of homosexual rights, minority sexual preferences, and those of African, Native, Asian and female Americans were brought to the fore to satisfy the social agendas of Teacher's College. Walter McDougall of the Foreign Policy Institute, a Pulitzer-prize winner, believes that education today is nothing but an ongoing effort "to mandate an alternate reality…. There is no question that [school history books today] presume to explain US history by ignoring Lockean individualism, disparaging George Washington and defending… pornography on the Internet."

Elsewhere in the world, revisionism has been well underway. Hollywood routinely produces realistic-looking movies that have reinvented key events in history. Many of the social policies of Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and their forebears, which brought with them the encouragement of individualism, personal endeavour and scholastic achievement, have been severely disparaged and misreported, not only in the liberal press, but also through TV documentaries, films, debates and, yes, school textbooks. Eakman remarks:

"In 'United States History: In the Course of Human Events', the Aztecs are portrayed as victims of the Spanish conquerors; cannibalistic practices likened to other 'advanced cultures' of the time (moral equivalence). The Renaissance [a noteworthy period of personal initiative] gets seven lines of text; the Enlightenment gets six lines; the Reformation gets none at all! George Washington [America's first patriot] is likened to a boring fellow of ordinary talent who is more symbol than fact. Even a terrorist like César Chavez gets more praise - and more space - than George Washington. Indeed the name of George Washington as a designation for schools is now being removed in several localities because he once owned slaves, another good excuse to excise an important historical figure from the American culture.

…Take another series, entitled 'History of Us', put out by Oxford University Press and approved for use in fifth-, sixth- and seventh-grade classrooms nationwide.… This 10-volume series by former journalist Joy Hakim… [has] not a semblance of objectivity. Even the publisher admits - and arrogantly supports - Hakim's bias: 'She [Hakim] is very negative about Reagan, but she believes that history is going to agree with her,' said an Oxford University press spokesperson. Who cares what history 'is going to agree with' somewhere down the road? Do the blatantly political beliefs of an individual belong in a child's history book?"

Geography too is so badly taught that, during my research on this subject in the United States over a ten-year period, it was actually quite rare to find a 15- to 20-year-old who could name seven countries on the continent of Europe. Many would quote by rote the nations that had been discussed in recent news items on CNN, such as Iraq, Israel or Libya.

The level of indoctrination that goes on in the media is of course well known. In spite of earnestly declaring in debates that 'Not all Muslims are terrorists', 'all Catholic priests are not paedophiles' and 'blacks are not exclusively muggers, social security fraudsters and drug-dealers', the stereotypes are apologetically hammered home through careful selection of the news items covered. Very few 'good news' items are broadcast, reinforcing a feeling of social despair that 'the world is going to hell in a handbasket'.

IN CONCLUSION
If a child is doing poorly at school, either with general academics, or specifically with their reading, maths, etc., the following questions should be asked:

· How effective is the level of discipline you apply to your child?
· Does your child do what you say, or is s/he rebellious?
· Does your child's teacher have control of the class?
· Has your child been taught to read using phonics or the whole- word method?
· Does your child eat junk/processed food, such as burger meals, fried foods, kebabs, fizzy drinks and sugar-laden foods?
· Does your child drink adequate amounts of water?
· Does your child take nutritional supplementation?
· Does your child have food allergies?
· Does your child live in a toxic environment?
· Does your child exhibit any physical problems, such as migraine headaches, asthma, constant colds, depression, listlessness or eczema?
· Does your child mix with the wrong crowd?
· Does your child speak well?
· Is your child naughty?
· Is your child a leader or a follower?
· Is your child a good or bad influence on others?

These and other questions can determine where the potential problems lie. While teachers often do a great job, some don't, and it is important to identify teacher problems, if they exist. Equally, it is important not to pathologise into an illness kids being kids. My research shows that many of the problems children face today result from poor diet, poor parental discipline, poor teacher discipline and an aberrant and politically skewed curriculum designed to dumb children down and teach them to 'fit in' with the amoral new globalist society that is struggling to be born. The point is, all these elements, with the possible exception of world politics, can be controlled by the parents, if the parents have the will to make their voices heard.

Slow Poisoning of America
by Donna Russell

I wondered if there could be an actual chemical causing the massive obesity epidemic, so did John Erb, a friend of mine. He was a research assistant at the University of Waterloo, and spent years working for the government. He made an amazing discovery while going through scientific journals for a book he was writing called The Slow Poisoning of America.

In hundreds of studies around the world, scientists were creating obese mice and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies. No strain of rat or mice is naturally obese, so the scientists have to create them. They make these morbidly obese creatures by injecting them with MSG when they are first born. The MSG triples the amount of insulin the pancreas creates, causing rats (and humans?) to become obese. They even have a title for the race of fat rodents they create: "MSG-Treated Rats".

MSG? I was shocked too. I went to my kitchen, checking the cupboards and the ridge. MSG was in everything! The Campbell's soups, the Hostess Doritos, the Lays flavored potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals, Kraft salad dressings, especially the 'healthy low fat' ones. The items that didn't have MSG had something called Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, which is just another name for Monosodium Glutamate.

It was shocking to see just how many of the foods we feed our children everyday are filled with this stuff. They hide MSG under many different names in order to fool those who catch on.

But it didn't stop there. When our family went out to eat, we started asking at the restaurants what menu items had MSG. Many employees, even the managers, swore they didn't use MSG. But when we ask for the ingredient list, which they grudgingly provided, sure enough MSG and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein were everywhere.

Burger King, McDonalds, Wendy's, Taco Bell, every restaurant, even the sit-down ones like TGIF, Chilis', Applebees and Denny's use MSG in abundance. Kentucky Fried Chicken seemed to be the WORST offender: MSG was in every chicken dish, salad dressing and gravy. No wonder I loved to eat that coating on the skin, their secret spice was MSG!

Why is MSG in so may of the foods we eat? Is it a preservative or a vitamin? Not according to my friend, John. In the book he wrote, an expose of the food additive industry called The Slow Poisoning of America, [go to http://www.spofamerica.com ] he said that MSG is added to food for the addictive effect it has on the human body.

Even the propaganda website sponsored by the food manufacturers lobby group supporting MSG [at http://www.msgfacts.com/facts/msgfact12.html ] explains that the reason they add it to food is to make people eat more. A study of elderly people showed that people eat more of the foods once MSG is added. The Glutamate Association lobby group says eating more benefits the elderly, but what does it do to the rest of us?

'Betcha can't eat just one', takes on a whole new meaning where MSG is concerned! And we wonder why the nation is overweight? The MSG manufacturers themselves admit that it addicts people to their products. It makes people choose their product over others, and makes people eat more of it than they would if MSG wasn't added.

Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, it is an addictive substance! Since its introduction into the American food supply fifty years ago, MSG has been added in larger and larger doses to the prepackaged meals, soups, snacks and fast foods we are tempted to eat everyday.

The FDA has set no limits on how much of it can be added to food. They claim it's safe to eat in any amount. How can they claim it is safe when there are hundreds of scientific studies with titles like these?

Hypothalamic Lesion Induced by Injection of Monosodium Glutamate in Suckling Period and Subsequent Development of Obesity. Tanaka K, Shimada M, Nakao K, Kusunoki Exp Neurol. 1978 Oct.

Yes, that last study, written in 1978, was not a typo. Both the medical research community and food manufacturers have known MSG's side effects for decades!
[Does MSG cross the placental barrier or become a constituent of breast milk?]

If you are one of the few who can still believe that MSG is good for us, and you don't believe what John Erb has to say, see for yourself. Go to the National Library of Medicine, at: http://www.pubmed.com. Type in the words "MSG Obese", and read a few of the 115 medical studies that appear.

Many studies mentioned in John Erb's book link MSG to diabetes, migraines and other headaches, autism, ADD/HD and even Alzheimer's.

But what can we do to stop the food manufactures from dumping fattening, addictive and brain damaging MSG into our food supply and causing the obesity epidemic we now see? And, perhaps causing or contributing to the coinciding epidemic of depression?(Remember the studies above that mentions serotonin and hypothalamic lesions.

Even as you read this, George W. Bush and his corporate supporters are pushing a Bill through Congress. Called the "Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act", also known as the "Cheeseburger Bill". This sweeping law bans anyone from suing food manufacturers, sellers, and distributors, even if it comes out that they purposely added an addictive chemical to their foods.

The Bill has already been rushed through the House of Representatives, and is due for the same rubber stamp at Senate level. It is important that Bush and his corporate supporters get it through before the media lets everyone know about MSG, the intentional Nicotine for food.

Several months ago, John Erb took his book and his concerns to one of the highest government health officials in Canada. While sitting in the Government office, the official told him, "Sure I know how bad MSG is, I wouldn't touch the stuff!" But this top level government official refused to tell the public what he knew.

The big media doesn't want to tell the public either, fearing legal issues with their advertisers. It seems that the fallout on the fast food industry may hurt their profit margin.

So what do we do? The food producers and restaurants have been addicting us to their products for years, and now we are paying the price for it. Our children should not be cursed with obesity, and maybe brain damage causing depression, caused by an addictive food additive.

But what can I do about it? I'm just one voice. What can I do to stop the poisoning of our children, while guys like Bush are insuring financial protection for the industry that is poisoning us? Blow the whistle on MSG.

I am sending this email out to everyone I know in an attempt to show you the truth that the corporate-owned politicians and media won't tell you, and hope that enough people are successful in forwarding it to those who can expose this insidious evil before Bush can pass the Bill protecting those who have knowingly poisoned us.
.
The food industry learned a lot from the tobacco industry. Imagine if big tobacco had a bill like this in place before someone blew the whistle on nicotine?

We do not want to be rats in one giant experiment, and we do not approve of food that makes us into a nation of obese, lethargic, depressed, addicted sheep, waiting for the slaughter.

With your help we can put an end to this, and stop the Slow Poisoning of America. Let's save our children.

VACCINATION
An injection of common sense?
by Steven Ransom

Vaccination is heralded as the means of keeping us protected from the major diseases known to man. This particular medical intervention has also been credited with bringing an end to a number of supposedly 'killer epidemics'. Because of the largely supportive press that vaccination has received, the practice is rarely questioned, as vaccine critic Dr Richard Moskowitz states:

"Vaccines have become sacraments of our faith in biotechnology in the sense that (1) their efficacy and safety are widely seen as self-evident and needing no further proof; (2) they are given automatically to everyone, by force if necessary, but always in the name of the public good; (3) they ritually initiate our loyal participation in the medical enterprise as a whole. They celebrate our right and power as a civilization to manipulate biological processes ad-libitum and for profit, without undue concern for or even any explicit concept of the total health of the populations about to be subjected to them."

In the short essay Modern Medicine: The New World Religion, Oliver Clerc makes the point that our faith as such - the 'religious side' to humanity - isn't really dying away; our worship is merely being given over to another god:

"The facts show clearly - for anyone taking the time to study them - that medicine today enjoys an astonishing degree of undeserved credit that is out of all proportion to its actual results or promises. Real health keeps regressing, while the great medical 'miracles', such as vaccines and antibiotics, are now clearly showing their limitations, which some had foreseen and warned of right from the start. This undeserved credit comes mostly from the fact that medicine and science have replaced religion as the only certain belief in an uncertain world. And the doctors and scientists are seen as the priests of the new religion, delivering through the certainties of science what the old discredited gods were not able to deliver. If we can no longer believe in the miracles, cures and curses of the old religions, we can certainly believe in the miracles, the cures and the destructive powers of the new science."

'JUST KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON'
From smallpox to TB, from meningitis to the flu, the vaccines being injected to 'protect' us from these diseases are accepted by the great majority without question. With the advent of the Internet however, valid arguments against vaccination began to filter through. But so deep-rooted is our faith in vaccination, that we tend to shut our eyes and minds from objective examination of the subject, and 'just keep on keepin' on', believing that the experts know best. At what point do we finally draw the line and start to investigate for ourselves?

NOT SO GLOWING
A dispassionate examination of the true history of vaccination reveals a very different picture to the glowing falsehoods presented to us by the vaccine industry. The following statement from Gerhard Buchwald, a long-time critic of the vaccine industry, is quite illuminating:

"I have lectured all over the world and I have always had a special interest in newspapers. All of them have one thing in common, there is always some reference made to some epidemic in some part of the world. For instance, two years ago, one paper referred to a polio epidemic in Holland. For the past three years, our newspapers have commented on the diphtheria epidemic in Russia. By these means, the population is constantly threatened with epidemics, they have been made to fear them, and the reports always conclude: 'Go and get vaccinated.' "

THE FAMOUS EDWARD JENNER
At this stage, readers might well be saying, "What about Edward Jenner, the founder of vaccination? What about smallpox, TB, etc? Didn't these diseases decline with the introduction of Jenner's vaccination programme?" The popular accounts of the founder of vaccination and especially the story on smallpox eradication, to which all advocates of vaccination point as an example of 'success', differ greatly from what actually occurred.

Edward Jenner was born in Berkeley, Gloucestershire on 17th May 1749. He was the eighth of the nine children born to the vicar of Berkeley, the Reverend Stephen Jenner, and his wife Sarah. By the time Edward was five years old, both of his parents had died and he was left in the care of his older sister, Mary, who was soon to marry the incoming vicar, the Reverend G. C. Black. Jenner went to school in Wotton-under-Edge and Cirencester.

JENNER: A VACCINE-INJURED CHILD?
It is sad to report that Jenner himself may well have been a vaccine-injured child. When he was eight years old, he was deemed to have come in contact with a smallpox-infected person and was subsequently variolated for smallpox. Variolation entailed the physician making a subcutaneous cut into the skin, into which human smallpox pustules were inserted. This barbaric treatment is reported to have had a lifelong effect upon Jenner's general health. In attempting to discover more on this particular matter, I am grateful to David Mullin, the curator of The Edward Jenner Museum in Berkeley, Gloucester. He quoted from a manuscript in his possession, entitled The Berkeley Papers, written by Thomas Dudley Fosbroke, who had known Edward Jenner personally. According to Fosbroke, six months after this treatment, Jenner still had not recovered. One does not need to ponder too hard the reasons why:

"He was a fine, ruddy boy, and at eight years of age, was, with many others, put under a preparatory process for Inoculation with the Smallpox, by the late Mr. Holbrow, of Wotton Underedge. This preparation lasted six weeks. He was bled to ascertain whether his blood was fine; was purged repeatedly, till he became emaciated and feeble; was kept on very low diet, small in quantity, and dosed with a diet-drink to sweeten the blood. After this barbarism of human-veterinary practice, he was removed to one of the then usual inoculation stables, and haltered up with others in a terrible state of disease, although none died. The effect of the preparation and inoculation just mentioned was this - as a child, he could never enjoy sleep and was constantly haunted by imaginary noises; and a sensibility too acutely alive to these and sudden jars has ever since subsisted."

One can hardly begin to imagine what a catastrophic effect, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, this treatment would have had on the young Jenner. And the wounds seemed to have lasted a lifetime. Jenner was 71 at the time of Fosbroke's writings.

At the age of 14, Jenner was apprenticed for seven years to Mr Daniel Ludlow, a surgeon of Chipping Sodbury, where he gained most of the experience needed for his future occupation as a surgeon.

THE CUCKOO PAPERS
In 1770, Jenner moved to St. George's Hospital in London to complete his medical training under the surgeon, John Hunter. At 23, he returned to his native village of Berkeley, staying there for 17 years, to practice as an unqualified surgeon and apothecary, as yet unknown to the world at large. In real terms, there was little difference between a qualified or unqualified surgeon. The ministrations from either were nothing less than barbaric. The particular surgical 'skills' that Jenner brought to his home town high street consisted of bloodletting, either by cutting veins or by applying leeches, and rapid amputation - without anaesthetics - of limbs that were gangrenous with infection after injury. The operation that Jenner performed most frequently was 'cutting for the stone' - the removal of kidney stones. There was no pain relief or anaesthesia in those days, and the death rate was extremely high for almost all major surgical operations. This was primarily due to the scant attention paid to cleanliness and general hygiene in the operating 'theatre'.

In 1787, Jenner sent a paper on 'The Natural History of the Cuckoo' to the Royal Society and, with Hunter's influence, was elected a Fellow of The Royal Society (F.R.S.). Three years later he applied to St. Andrew's University for an M.D. and became Dr. Jenner for the modest outlay of £15. Later on in life, after several applications, he was also granted an M.D. by the University of Oxford, though this was not until after his vaccination theory had been generally adopted. Addressing an anti-vaccination crowd during the late 19th century, this whole period was summarised by a Dr Walter Hadwen thus:

"Now this man Jenner had never passed a medical examination in his life. Jenner looked upon the whole thing as a superfluity, and he hung up 'Surgeon, Apothecary' over his door without any of the qualifications that warranted the assumption. It was not until twenty years after he was in practice that he thought it advisable to get a few letters after his name. Consequently he then communicated with a Scotch University and obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine for the sum of £15 and nothing more.

Then he sent to the Royal College of Physicians in London to get their diploma, and even presented his Oxford degree as an argument in his favour. But they considered he had had quite enough on the cheap already, and told him distinctly that until he passed the usual examinations they were not going to give him any more. This was a sufficient check in Jenner's case, and he settled down quietly without any diploma of physician."

The apparent ease with which Jenner gained his medical qualifications was also noted by vaccine historian A. W. Hutton:

"His professional acquirements were but slender; his medical degree was the outcome of no examination or scientific work, but merely of a fee of fifteen guineas paid to the University of St. Andrews; while his other and more important distinction, his Fellowship in the Royal Society, was obtained by what even Dr. Norman Moore, his latest biographer and apologist, is constrained to admit was little else than a fraud."

MIND YOUR OWN BEESWAX
Jenner was particularly interested in looking at ways of treating smallpox. This was considered a very serious condition, not least because of the pock marks left on the skin of the survivors, especially on the face. In higher circles, ladies (and sometimes gentlemen) took to bees-waxing their faces to improve their 'pocked' appearance. Today, if you visit houses of the early 19th century, you are likely to see adjustable fire screens to each side of the fireplace. This shield-shaped furniture was commonplace. Since the only source of heat was by the fireplace, ladies were known to inadvertently melt their facial beeswax. The screens were put there to avoid this embarrassment. Since no real lady would call attention to another lady to attend to that which she was not supposed to be wearing in the first place, the admonition to "Mind your own beeswax!" came into general use.

In 1796, with smallpox ravaging towns and cities in the UK, Jenner was seeking ways of treating this condition. Based on an age-old folklore remedy at the time, he formulated a particular mixture from cowpox sores and, via two cuts made into the arm, introduced this mixture into an 8 year-old boy named James Phipps. Phipps never contracted smallpox. Was this the breakthrough the world was waiting for? Was this remedy more than just folklore? It seemed that Jenner was on to something. In fact, Jenner's 'pox' remedy was based loosely on the age-old medical theory of 'like cures like' - a pox cures pox. Not surprisingly, variations of the 'like cures like' theme had been in existence for many centuries.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF 'LIKE CURES LIKE'
Earliest medical records contain numerous accounts of tribes using animals and birds of various colours in healing rituals. Diseased individuals with, let us say, jaundice or yellow fever would have incantations said over them. The disease would be commanded to leave, and at the same time a yellow bird would be released, flying away with the similarly coloured symptoms and hopefully the disease. Many books make reference to Hippocrates, famed for stating: "Where there is illness there also is the cure." While this statement might appear profound, it actually contains very little information that could be considered meaningful.

In the 15th century, the alchemist and physician Paracelsus popularised another derivative of 'like cures like' - 'the doctrine of signatures'. This is the belief that plants, flowers and leaves of a certain shape are medicinally beneficial for human organs of a similar shape, hence the names of plants such as heartsease, eyebright, lungwort, spleenwort, liverwort, etc. Again, references to this idea are found in earliest recorded medical history, but it was Paracelsus who gathered all the strands together to present what he claimed to be his doctrine.

As early as the 10th century, Chinese medical texts refer to variolation for the treatment of smallpox, whereby powdered scabs from smallpox pustules were inserted into the nose or under the skin, via cuts to the body, a tradition that was to last for many centuries and formed the basis for the young Jenner's treatment. In 1755, a certain Mr. Porter, English Ambassador to Constantinople, wrote the following:

"It is the tradition and opinion of the country that a certain angel presides over this disease [smallpox]. That it is to bespeak his favour and evidence their confidence that the Georgians take a small portion of variolous matter, and, by means of scarification [cutting], introduce it between the thumb and fore finger of a sound person. The operation is supposed to never miss its effect. To secure beyond all uncertainty, the good will of the angel, they hang up scarlet clothes about the bed, that being the favourite colour of the celestial inhabitant they wish to propitiate."
A Dr Henry Lindlahr offers a more contemporary assessment:

"Jenner, an English barber and chiropodist, is usually credited with the discovery of vaccination. The doubtful honour, however, belongs in reality to an old Circassian woman who, according to the historian Le Duc, in the year 1672 startled Constantinople with the announcement that the Virgin Mary had revealed to her an unfailing preventive against the smallpox. Her specific was inoculation with the genuine smallpox virus. The Circassian seeress cut a cross in the flesh of people and inoculated this wound with the smallpox virus. Together with this she prescribed prayer, abstinence from meat, and fasting for forty days. But even with her [or the Virgin Mary] the idea was not an original one, because the principle of isopathy (curing a disease with its own disease products) was explicitly taught one hundred years before that by Paracelsus, the great genius of the Renaissance of learning of the Middle Ages. But even he was only voicing the secret teachings of ancient folklore, sympathy healing and magic dating back to the Druids and Seers of ancient Britain and Germany."

PUS, BLOOD AND HAIR
Minus the scarlet threads, Jenner was simply building on medical theories that had been in existence for centuries previously. The poor unfortunates injected with Jenner's 'mixture' received a combination of bovine pus extracted from lacerated calves' bellies, plus bovine skin, flesh, blood and hair. To create this concoction, calves were strapped down to a table, their bellies were lacerated and then rubbed with various toxins, including pustules from smallpox victims. This caused the cuts to become infected and fester, the resultant pus forming the basis for Jenner's smallpox vaccine. Jenner's own particularly poisonous concoctions introduced nothing new to the barbaric and largely ineffective 18th century conventional medical cabinet.

What then of Phipps and others who had been vaccinated by Jenner in those experimental years? After all, Phipps lived, but not for very long, dying of TB at aged 20. During this time, Jenner had also been inoculating his son with swine-pox matter, from aged 18 months, and he continued to do so intermittently over the years. He too died of TB, aged twenty one. Several vaccination historians have argued that the toxic assault caused by the smallpox vaccine weakened the immune system to such an extent that TB was more easily contracted by the vaccine recipients. Dr A Wilder, Professor of Pathology and the former editor of The New York Medical Times, stated:

"Consumption (TB) follows in the wake of vaccination as surely as effect follows cause."

And a Dr. William Howard Hay, addressing the Medical Freedom Society, reminds us of the inevitable ill-health that must surely follow Jenner's 'ministrations':

"It is nonsense to think that you can inject pus - and it is usually from the pustule end of the dead smallpox victim - it is unthinkable that you can inject that into a little child and in any way improve its health. The body has its own methods of defence. These depend on the vitality of the body at the time. If it is vital enough, it will resist all infections; if it isn't vital enough, it won't. And you can't change the vitality of the body for the better by introducing poison of any kind into it."

These unsavoury facts are of course omitted from today's glowing conventional vaccination fables.

THE LIFE-PRESERVING FLUID!
In 1798, after several unsuccessful attempts to find the right formula, Jenner mixed a combination of horse-grease and cowpox matter, 'horse grease' being the general term used for the by-product derived from seborrhoeal lesions - a scaling disorder of the skin, found on the lower limbs of the horse, due to unclean stable conditions. This new variation superseded his original concoction, which he admitted had "…no protective virtue." Dr Walter Hadwen, from whom we have already heard, was a notorious vaccine critic at the end of the 19th century. In Goddard's Assembly Rooms, Gloucester, on January 25th 1896, during the height of the Gloucester smallpox crisis, Hadwen gave a remarkable speech to the people on the failures of Jenner and the ideas he proposed. On the matter of horse grease, Hadwen notes:

"I had better, at the outset, state to you distinctly the position I occupy on the subject. I stand here not only as a medical man, but as a father and a citizen. As a medical man I look upon vaccination as an insult to common sense, as superstitious in its origin, unscientific in theory and practice, and useless and dangerous in its character; while as a father and a citizen I view the Compulsory Vaccination Acts as demoralising in their tendencies, degrading in their character, cruel and unjust in their enactments, and an unwarrantable interference with parental responsibility and liberty - (cheers) - such as ought not to be tolerated in a country like England, which has boasted of her civil and religious freedom for generations past. (Renewed cheers.)

It seems that a man had been seeing to the grease upon a horse's heels, and had gone to milk the cows without washing his hands. The result was that it produced that peculiar kind of disease known by the name of horse-grease cowpox. "This," said Jenner, "is the life-preserving fluid!" and he went home to write about the wonderful virtues of horse-grease cowpox. However, it was necessary to perform an experiment, and he inoculated a boy named John Baker with horse-grease, direct from the horse's heels. He intended later to inoculate him with smallpox in order to see whether it would take, but the poor boy died in the workhouse directly afterwards from a contagious fever contracted from the inoculation."

And extracts from a kindly biography even, written by Jenner's good friend Dr John Baron, sensitively attest to the uselessness of Jenner's cowpox mixtures:

"Many years elapsed before he had an opportunity of completing his projected experiments in vaccination, and he encountered numerous difficulties in carrying on the preliminary part of his inquiry. In the first place, he had found from his own observation, as well as from that of other medical gentlemen in the county, that what was commonly called cow pox, was not a certain preventive of smallpox. This fact damped, but did not extinguish, his ardour." (Emphasis mine)

And further in the same biography:

"He learned that there were well-authenticated instances to prove that when the true cowpox broke out among the cattle at a dairy, and was communicated to the milkers, even they had subsequently had smallpox. Tidings of this kind, which seemed to render further investigation useless, checked for a season his fond hopes; but resistance and difficulty only augmented his energy, and he resumed his labours with redoubled zeal."

Despite the fact that his founding theory had floundered twice-over, Jenner pressed on regardless. In 1802, Jenner's misguided zeal was given a considerable boost when the UK government gave him £10,000 (equivalent to roughly £250,000 today) to explore his ideas further - a sobering reminder that there's no accounting for some government grants. With smallpox still considered the most pressing disease at that time, Jenner accepted the generous state gift. He took some of his horse-grease cowpox mixture and inoculated six children and, without waiting to see the result, took his experimental paper to London to get it heard and hopefully printed. Dr Hadwen again:

"And in that paper he had the audacity to assert that it was not necessary to wait to see the result because the proofs he already had were so conclusive, and time experiments had told such an extraordinary tale - although he had completed but one experiment in his life, and that did not prove it at all. As soon as the paper was published the outcry was tremendous. "What?" said the people, "Take horse-grease? Filthy grease from horses' heels, take that and put it into the blood of a child?" No, they would have nothing to do with it. They did not mind having cowpox without the horse, but they could not think of having the cowpox with the horse in it. Dr. Pearson wrote to Jenner, telling him he must take the horse out or "it would damn the whole thing." Consequently - there is no accounting for taste - they denounced horse-grease cowpox, but were prepared to accept spontaneous cowpox."

LARGE REVENUES
In 1807, Jenner convinced the Royal College of Physicians and the British Parliament that his original vaccine was safe and effective, having dutifully reverted to his original cow-pus mixture. Moreover, he stressed that the latter could also produce large revenues. In a manner not too dissimilar to the way in which today's UK Medicines Control Agency is in the lap of the pharmaceutical industry, the mention of those two words large revenues sealed the matter. Despite there being no evidence that Jenner's vaccination worked, vaccination began in earnest.

Throughout his smallpox years, Jenner was convinced that he had been 'called' as some kind of saviour for mankind and that God had tasked him to find the cure for smallpox:

"The joy I felt at the prospect before me of being the instrument destined to take away from the world one of its greatest calamities was so excessive that I have sometimes found myself in a kind of reverie."

JENNER THE FREEMASON
Jenner's reverie was soon to be interrupted with yet another government grant, this time for £500,000 in today's terms. Jenner's belief that he had been divinely called to solve the smallpox crisis may well have been reinforced in his mind and spirit through his heavy involvement in freemasonry. He held the position of Worshipful Master of his local freemason's lodge - The Royal Faith and Friendship Lodge No. 270, Berkeley, where he led many esoteric meetings with assorted titled gentry. Anyone who has studied freemasonry from a spiritual perspective however, will note that there is a clear demarcation between the 'divinity' of freemasons and their craft and the divinity of God, as described in Scripture, which expressly forbids such occultist involvement.

Supporters of freemasonry described lodge meetings as a means of conveying to the individual the upright principles of brotherly love, equality, truth and of the 'divinity' within. Opposition to freemasonry stemmed from the fact that masonic rituals and teachings demonstrated occult influence and that meetings were always conducted behind closed doors, inviting the very reasonable question - why should knowledge considered beneficial to mankind be kept from the great majority of mankind?

Titles, prestige, position and money in abundance, but still, Jenner could not present one iota of evidence for the efficacy of vaccination. His belief that he had been divinely called, coupled with grant monies now totalling £750,000, allowed him to provide his vaccination 'service' free of charge to the poor, a service he dispensed from a thatched hut he called his Temple of Vaccinia. Goodness knows how much ill-health and death Jenner dispensed during those years. Sadly, as is so often the case with prestigious individuals 'wanting only to help humanity', the finer details of their methodologies are generally accepted a priori. Who are we to nit-pick and question such honourable and philanthropic intentions?

By the time of his death in 1823, Jenner had witnessed none of the miraculous reversals of smallpox, such as those falsely reported in today's conventional medical texts. The people continued to die at a very high rate, and not only from smallpox. Even among the vaccinated, there was consumption, typhoid, cholera and a number of other seemingly indiscriminate killers. Why was this?

Vitamin D Expert Fired for Recommending Sunshine

Dr. Michael F. Holick, a professor at Boston University's medical school and a well-known researcher on the topic of sunlight and vitamin D, was asked to resign from his position in the dermatology department after the chairwoman of the department criticized his conclusions.

Holick, author of the new book 'The UV Advantage,' has spoken out about the importance of sun exposure to boosting vitamin D levels and health. He says there are substantial benefits of sunlight, including promoting strong bones and easing depression, but public health officials have been portraying the sun as the enemy for so long that they don't want to hear any alternative conclusions.

But while the American Academy of Dermatology is calling Holick's recommendations of receiving adequate sun exposure for health benefits 'irresponsible,' other dermatologists say Holick, who has authored over 100 published papers, developed treatments for psoriasis and studied sunlight's role in vitamin D production, is extremely creative and 'ahead of his time.'

While Holick says that sunburns make skin cancer more likely, he contends that moderate sun exposure could reduce the risk of prostate and breast cancers, based on epidemiological studies suggesting a lower incidence of those cancers in sunnier climates. He also says a few minutes of sun exposure on bare skin several times a week can help reduce the incidence of vitamin D deficiency, which occurs often in northern cities where people don't receive adequate sun exposure during the winter months.

Although the resignation is largely symbolic - he will remain director of BU Medical Center's Vitamin D lab while continuing to teach with no loss in salary - Holick believes he is "being punished for challenging one of the dogmas of dermatology."
The Miami Herald, 15th April 2004

DR. MERCOLA'S COMMENT: I believe that Dr. Holick's book, The UV Advantage, is an incredibly important read for anyone interested in preventing numerous health problems and bettering their health, but is even more essential for those who follow the experts' recommendations to stay out of the sun.

It is quite disturbing that Dr. Holick, one of the world's foremost authorities on vitamin D, would be asked to resign when his recommendations are right on target. It is the widespread recommendation from the 'experts' to avoid sun exposure that is causing harm. This myth has contributed to massive amounts of disease and illness in our society because we all need sunshine to stay healthy.

If you are not yet aware of the importance of sun exposure to health (you should still avoid getting sunburned), I encourage you to type 'sun' into the search engine in the upper right corner of my homepage. This will give you access to numerous important articles on the topic.
