Syndrome X
Metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, hypoglycaemia, etc.

Profile
This condition sounds like some alien flesh-eating disease but it isn’t. Endocrinologist and professor emeritus of medicine, Gerald M Reaven of Stanford University coined the term in 1988 to unify the underlying causes behind a modern ‘epidemic’, whose symptoms include obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular-related symptoms. Syndrome X is the endgame of processed, cooked western diets, high-energy snacking coupled with indolent lifestyles and stress. Mike Adams of Natural News reports:

“Although it’s being seen in younger and younger people these days, Syndrome X is normally a condition that develops over time, after years of bad eating habits and sugar indulgence. Of course, if you’ve ever looked at the fine print on food labels, you know that sugar comes in many forms and can be found in the most unlikely places, including things like salad dressing, prepared pasta sauces and bread. Sugar can’t take all the blame, though. Simple carbohydrates, especially those found in starchy, processed foods and products made with white flour also contribute to the problem.”1

You have to work hard and consistently to get Syndrome X’s combo of problems, and millions of us do. The spectre’s familiar; our favourite Hollywood star packing on the pounds as they move into their fifties. We talk of the ‘modern obesity epidemic’ in America, Canada, Australia, Britain and elsewhere, but most of this is Syndrome X in all its infamy with the following well-recognised symptoms:

  • Increased weight
  • Impaired glucose tolerance (insulin resistance)
  • Increased triglycerides
  • Post-meal fatigue
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver
  • Arthritis or ‘clicky’ joints
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome in women (PCOS)
  • Sugar addiction, specifically cravings for sweets, grains and refined carbohydrates
  • High blood pressure
  • Abnormal HDL/LDL cholesterol ratio
  • Diabetes mellitus (type-2)
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Misc: Trembling, anxiety, fatigue, wobbly if hungry, confusion, irritability, palpitations, blurred vision, cold hands and feet, low blood pressure, impotence, low sperm motility, blackouts, angry outbursts, rambling speech, violence, depression, inappropriate or strange behaviour, forgetfulness, road rage, and an inability to concentrate

Official treatments
The symptoms are usually treated separately with drug regimes, i.e. diuretics and ACE inhibitor drugs for hypertension, statins for high LDL cholesterol, etc. This doomed approach does not address the reasons why the patient developed the conditions in the first place. Many clinics, however, are waking up to the value of the combined metabolic protocol/lifestyle changes advocated at the end of this section. The Journal of the American Medical Association states:

“The metabolic syndrome, a concurrence of disturbed glucose and insulin metabolism, overweight and abdominal fat distribution, mild dyslipidemia, and hypertension, is associated with subsequent development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Despite its high prevalence, little is known of the prospective association of the metabolic syndrome with cardiovascular and overall mortality.” 2

Causes
In simple terms, Syndrome X is about over-consumption and under-nourishment. That’s over-consumption of animal proteins, refined carbohydrates and processed foodstuffs, creating an acidic environment in which the body frantically strips calcium, magnesium, boron, etc. from the skeleton to keep the blood pH at 7.4. And under-nourishment, since almost all meals are comprised of dead animals, sick crops grown in sicker soils, refined foods – all cooked to wreck any remaining nutrition/information in this unappetising morass. And did I mention the toxicity of GM food in general, plus additives, packers, fillers, fluoridated water, high-fructose corn syrups, sugar sodas, slurpies, milk shakes, Red Bull and alcoholic beverages thrown in for good measure? Now run this program for 10 years in a stressful environment with negligible exercise and great dollops of electromagnetic pollution to top it off and you’re beginning to see what a Trojan the body is to put up with it. For a fuller exposé of the sugar rollercoaster, see Hypoglycaemia. If there is one condition in this book which epitomises the wretched plight of 21st century civilised, well-porked-out humanity, it’s Syndrome X or ‘Metabolic Disease’.

Take action?
You’ve got to want to change. There are two paths in your future: a nice ride into the sunset or a painful, premature death. If you don’t want to change your wicked ways now, you’ll probably wait until you get really sick, by which time some of the damage could be irreversible. I would say that’s another symptom of Syndrome X - boneheaded indolence – no disrespect, of course.
DIET: COMMENCE THE FOOD FOR THOUGHT LIFESTYLE REGIMEN. If candida or fungal problems are in evidence, commence the ANTI-CANDIDA DIETARY REGIMEN instead
DIET: Ensure that 80-90% of the food you eat is plant-based and organic (very important)
DIET: Ensure 70-80% of the food you eat is consumed raw to preserve nutrients
DIET: Meat, if eaten, should be no higher than 5% of the total food intake and limited to organic chicken and cold-caught fish. Vegetarianism is far better for a fast recovery
DIET: Keep grains, root veggies and high-glycaemic foods to a minimum. Maximise complex carbohydrate intake by juicing carefully selected low-glycaemic, high ORAC (antioxidant) vegetables, coupled with ginger root.
DIET: High raw food intake is effortless when you master the art of juicing. Avoid juicing loads of carrots as these are rich in sugar. Avoid juicing buckets of fruit, too much sugar and acid. Are you always lurching towards sugar stuff? The chances are you have yeast/fungal overgrowths and the resultant sugar addiction to feed them. Use green mixes such as Great Greens, Green Qi or Nature’s Living Superfood to bulk out your juices with some serious nutrition
HYDRATION: Increase water intake to A MINIMUM OF four pints (2 litres) per day
HYDRATION: Half a teaspoon (tsp) of unrefined sea salt or, best, Himalayan salt for every ten glasses of water, taken straight into the mouth in the morning (NOT sodium chloride, an industrial poison). Sprinkle a few flakes on your tongue and allow to melt upon retiring
RESTORING NUTRIENT BALANCE: COMMENCE THE BASIC SUPPLEMENT PROGRAM, ensuring:
Vitamin C complex powder (ascorbates plus bioflavonoids), 25-30 g per day. (See A Guide to Nutritional Supplements before taking)
Optimise Vitamin D3 serum levels to 60-70 ng/ml (See A Guide to Nutritional Supplements before taking)
Chromium picolinate, 200 mcg per day
A probiotic supplement to install beneficial flora
ANTI-PARASITE: Take ginger root and juice it into your daily veggie juices just enough to give you that bite at the back of the throat
ANTI-PARASITE: Use tablespoons of virgin or extra virgin coconut oil to assist in your anti-yeast program. Do a search on ‘Coconut oil cleanse’ at www.naturalnews.com for further details. This might include a 3 – 7 day fast to allow the digestive system time to repair and ‘catch up’
ANTI-PARASITE: Use a decent probiotic powder mix, and lots of it, to rebalance bowel flora.
ANTI-PARASITE: Take three allicin capsules twice a day. Allicin is the stabilised oxygen and sulphur bonds of garlic and extremely anti-fungal.3 Allicin spray and cream are also great for topical problems, wounds that won’t heal, etc.
ANTI-PARASITE: Wormwood capsules, 3 g/day
ANTI-PARASITE: Brew Essiac tea properly and drink 2oz or more 4 times a day 4
ANTI-PARASITE: Take a parasite purge formula (this should contain items such as black walnut, clove, ginger root, anise seed, pau d’arco, peppermint and fennel)
THE ANTI-CANDIDA DIETARY REGIMEN will also provide you with haystacks of bowel-scraping fibre to help broom your innards clean.
DETOXIFICATION: Remove all toxic personal care and household products and damage triggers from your environment and lifestyle (the Neways mission). Don’t smoke and avoid second-hand smoke
DETOXIFICATION: Conduct a one-week bowel cleanse with magnesium oxide and consider colon hydrotherapy afterwards for extra internal cleanliness 5
EXERCISE: Commence a program of regular exercise to pump the lymphatic system, rid the body of waste products, draw oxygen into the body and switch off fermentation. (Consult a doctor before any exercise program – I have to tell you that!). Do not stint on exercise! Ideally, commence with 5 minutes stretching, 10 minutes weight/resistance training, 30 mins aerobic with heart-rate up so you are warm and moderately out of breath. This is the chief way of re-engaging proper insulin metabolism in the cells. Britain’s No. 1 fitness expert, Anthony Aurelius, has joined the Credence team. Read his excellent book Why Exercise? 6
STRESS MANAGEMENT: Assess your stress-load dispassionately. Chronic long-term stress causes severe depletion of nutrients, especially Vitamin C, which is the link between stress and heart disease. Reduce your workload and get away for a break in the sun at least twice a year. Change your habits. Many people are addicted to stress and won’t do this, retorting, “Easy for you to say!” - another symptom of Syndrome X. Read The Little Book of Attitude for a quick primer on how to deal effectively with stress.
