Free up Your Digestive Cycles
By Phillip Day

Feeling gassy, bloated and lethargic?

Want to feel good in just five days?

Embodied in the Principles of Longevity is the Science of Natural Hygiene. Natural Hygiene revolves around the following juicy topics:

  • Understanding the body’s natural digestive cycles
  • Correct consumption of fruit
  • The concept of high water-content food
  • Correct food-combining
  • Detoxification

The Body’s Natural Digestive Cycles
Natural Hygiene teaches that the human body’s digestive system goes through three, eight-hour cycles every twenty-four hours:

Noon – 8pm: Appropriation of food (eating and digestion)
8pm – 4am: Assimilation of food (absorption and use)
4am – Noon: Elimination (excretion of waste)

It isn’t hard to see these cycles in action. It’s also uncomfortably apparent when these cycles are thrown into turmoil by, for example, wolfing down a pizza late at night or machining your way through heart-attack-on-a-plate for breakfast, wondering why you’re feeling so trog-like and slothful.

APPROPRIATION (12 noon – 8pm)

The eating cycle. The body prefers the Appropriation Cycle to happen on time, commencing at noon. From this point until 8pm, eat 80% out of a kitchen garden (alkali ash foods: most fruits, vegetables, pulses, legumes and haricots) and 20% of everything else (acid ash foods: meat, dairy, grains, etc.) Eat little, but often to regulate blood sugar. Then, after 8pm, push back from the trough and allow the body to enter its next phase …

ASSIMILATION (8pm – 4am)
Assimilation occurs at night (nutrient extraction and use), which makes all the sense in the world since the body is resting and the digestive system can crank into gear with the minimum of disruption. Night-time is not a good time for Appropriation in view of the hour and horizontal angles involved.

During Assimilation, the body extracts nutrients in the intestines, which are designed to keep high-water-content, high-fibre, unrefined plant dietary in their clutches until the useable nutrients are withdrawn. If you leave two hours between your last meal and bed, a properly combined supper will have already departed the stomach and be on its peaceful way through the alimentary tract by the time you lay your precious head on the pillow. During the night, your body is putting all those nutrients to work replenishing your systems, replacing damaged cells and allowing the blood and lymph systems to pick up waste and take it to the garbage collection points.

ELIMINATION (4am – 12 noon)
Elimination cuts in around 4am and the garbage truck arrives to take out the junk (the poop cycle). Your body has sorted through all it has processed and rejected anything that cannot be absorbed and satisfactorily metabolised into new bits of you. Elimination is simply the removal of waste matter from the body, a highly efficient system, which uses the bowel and urine to excrete the junk the body no longer wants. The body also eliminates toxins via the underarm, groin area, nose, mouth, ears and skin. It’s all a mess but it’s leaving, and that’s a good thing.

Needless to say, Elimination is the most thwarted cycle of the three - an abuse that has led to chronic obesity and catastrophic ill-health in our populations. The Elimination Cycle is almost always ridden off the road by big, badly combined, bully-breakfasts, which hamstring the body’s digestive resources and prevent the proper excretion of toxins. Thus some remain within you and get filed in all the parts where they can do the least harm but be the most noticeable. Bad skin, bad breath, bad hair - we look with offence at our nakedness: ’Good grief, I look like a beached whale!’ Your body is naturally offended at the insult being aimed in its general direction and caustically replies: ’Then unplug me, Einstein, and let’s get rid of the whale.…’

Take Action
Those with the wicked ways I mentioned earlier, try this to feel good in just five days: From the time of waking, forget ‘breakfast’ and just snack sparingly on fruit or have a vegetable juice up until noon. Drink at least two glasses of water. After noon, you will become uncomfortable if you do not eat. The most important rule during Elimination (4 am – noon) is to allow the body to cleanse itself and help it on its way with highly nutritious, enzyme-loaded fruits and veg. These will help normalise your blood sugar naturally, so you won’t feel hungry. Don’t overdo the fruit.

The recipes in Food For Thought are ideal for Natural Hygiene detoxification. Notice the morning component is not breakfast cereal, fried eggs, fried bread, half a pig, coffee, etc, but fruit. If you have Candida or other sugar-sensitive condition, cut back on the fruit (to just one apple and pear), and have a veggie juice or light salad instead until noon arrives and Appropriation begins.

Do just five days of aligning your cycles in this way and tell me you don’t feel like snapping telephone poles in half with your bare hands. Getting lean but not mean is a matter of continuing in this paragon endeavour even after you start seeing the benefits. I like fast but genuine results in looking and feeling good. Give this a try.
